Voter suppression continues in Florida

It’s significant that the governor’s own overseer of elections, Secretary of State Kurt Browning, never once spoke in favor of the legislation. Only after Scott signed the bill did Browning offer a lukewarm endorsement.

The effort to manipulate elections by making it difficult for some people to vote has been around since the nation was founded. It’s a strategy that was infamously codified in the Deep South by “literacy tests” intended to disenfranchise black citizens, which prompted the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Congressional Democrats have asked the Justice Department to block Florida’s new law, which already took effect in all but five counties – Monroe, Hendry, Hardee, Collier and Hillsborough. There the federal government must approve changes to voter-eligibility rules.

In addition to impeding potential Democratic voters, Republicans lawmakers have tacked several items on the November 2012 ballot in hopes of galvanizing their own base. You’ll see an anti-abortion amendment, an anti-Obamacare amendment and still another measure that would allow tax dollars to be funneled to religious institutions.

The GOP’s dream scenario is a low turnout dominated by a grumpy, aging core of conservative white people who can’t stand Obama. With their party outnumbered on Florida’s voter rolls, top Republicans hope that rigging the voting rules will improve their chances to recapture the White House.

You could call it democracy with selective exclusion.

Or you could call it what it is.

Indeed – there is no logical or objective explanation for these measures other than as stated in the article.
I don't know why they are not eliminating it completely there is no Constitutional standing that gives any person the right to vote early. with one exception absentee ballets.

State lawmakers may pass any legislation they wish – including extended voting hours/days – and these measures are presumed to be Constitutional until such time a Federal court or the Supreme Court say otherwise.

Unless you can cite a case enjoining Florida or any other state from early voting as un-Constitutional, your argument has no factual standing.

Bullshit. Most early voting centers are at the Elections offices or at city halls (which are already staffed). Try again.

More early voting is cheaper. 100% vote by mail would be the least expensive if the budget were actually the concern.

Most early voting start on Saturday I think the staff is at home on the weekend.

So instead of closing on Saturday, they reduce the time by weeks? Sorry, doesn't make sense.

Working at city hall and the election boards on Saturday is not a normal work schedule. And closing the doors early doesn't happen.

I didn't say it was. I said: "Don't open on Saturday", period. The city halls and election offices ARE staffed Monday through Friday. Why not make early voting available during their normal working hours? Why reduce it for an entire week instead of just not opening them on Saturday?

What is the justification for reducing the number of early voting days?

What's the justification for having early voting in the frst place? Is it Constitutional?

The justification is so that the peoples voice is heard.

Yes it is perfectly constitutional.

There is no hope for the people on the right who frequent sites like this.

They do not care about democracy.

I have spent years on the internet and have had to give these people the definition of the word and explain to them that YES we are a democracy.

They refuse the undeniable court documented history of the republikcan partys attempts to keep legal American voters from voting.

Its in the case papers and judges have outlined the many infractions over the decades.

These people just dont care.

They like it and defend it.

They dont like democracy

Between the Ryan kill Medicare budget and Republican voter suppression efforts, the Republican Party is going to lose in 2012.

It didn't take them long to piss off the American people. Only about five months.

Now for the rest of your post. You only want a democracy on a limited basis. You only want it when democrats have total control of the government. But since America has Constitutional law we are a Constitutional Republic, that protects the rights of the minority whether than having a majority rule over the other 49% percent of the population.

Because in the past with a strong economy people were working and could not make it to city hall or the election board during normal working hours.

And now they're working harder just to keep their jobs and support the moocher class...

Now go back and read this thread and realise your whole purpose here is to pretend that voters will not have a hrder time voting under the laws this anti American weasel is making.

The WHOLE idea of this country is the voice of the people ALL OF THEM.

Not just the ones you like but the majority of them.

Any attempt to DECREASE who votes is TREASON.

The republican party has used all sorts of tactics over the decades to keep the voice of the people from being heard.

THEY ARE COURT DOCUMENTED.

If every American knew these facts the republican party would be DEAD.

Liberal media indeed.

If we had a liberal media in this country EVERY American would know how hard the republican work to keep Americans from voting.

It's about LEGAL voting. Can we all agree we want the system to be fair? One person, one vote.

Caging (voter suppression) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Evidence of caging in the United States1980sIn 1981 and 1986 the Republican National Committee (RNC) sent out letters to predominately African-American neighborhoods. When tens of thousands of them were returned undeliverable, the party successfully challenged the voters and had them deleted from voting rolls. Due to the violation of the Voting Rights Act, the RNC was taken to court. Its officials entered a consent decree which prohibited the party from engaging in anti-fraud initiatives that targeted minorities or conducting mail campaigns to "compile voter challenge lists."[5]

2004 US ElectionBBC journalist Greg Palast obtained an RNC document entitled "State Implementation Template III.doc" that described Republican election operations for caging plans in numerous states. The paragraph in the document pertaining to caging was:

I have yet to have ONE SINGLE con admitt this court documented fact is true.

The republicans have cheated in elections for decades to keep legal American voters from voting.

NOT ONE has ever accpeted these cold hard facts.

They dont care and will LIE for years straight about it.

They are the party of treason.

Wow...get a groin stretch from that one?

So, in the end, there is NO JUSTIFICATION for reducing the early voting hours.

Hey asswipe. No need to try again. I live in FLA. early voting takes place in precincts and they must have staff on hand. so,, you try again. it has to do with state budget
