Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The figures comes on the day new Home Secretary Alan Johnson makes his first major speech on crime, promising to be tough on loutish behaviour.

The U.S. has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 920 and South Africa 1,609.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling said: 'This is a damning indictment of this government's comprehensive failure over more than a decade to tackle the deep rooted social problems in our society, and the knock on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour.

The crime statistics show that in 2011 there were 155,428 offences of violence against the person in London, which dipped to 148,283 in 2013, and rose to 248,993 by 2017.

In 2011 the Met had 32,441 officers, down to 30,398 by 2013. They are now below the symbolic 30,000 level at 29,924, though commissioner Cressida Dick said she expected the number of officers to rise above the 30,000 mark by the end of the year.

Nothing about his manifesto or his expressed policy positions are derived from Islamic scripture. All my grandparents came to America, around the turn of the last century, from Norway (3) or Denmark (1). They, nor any of their Scandinavian family and friends, ever referred to themselves as Norwegian or Danish/Americans. They were proud to have learned English and to call themselves AMERICANS. Yes, they had thick accents and, when the Akavit flowed at parties, Norwegian was the prominent language. Both my parents spoke both fluently. Me, not so much.
