Vikings

i don’t see a thread on it already, which is surprising actually.

This is a great show. I like that it is historically accurate; the technology, the clothing, the whole look of it. I like that it’s based on legendary norsemen and incorporates actual historical events.

It has just the right balance of drama and action. I like the characters, even the evil ones.

I loved Game of Thrones too but I think I’m enjoying Vikings a little more. GOT was a bit too heavy on the drama. It’s like a soap opera in mid-evil times. Vikings is not.

Just a warning, there is graphic violence, but hey, Vikings weren’t nice guys.

To be fair, it's as historically accurate as it can be. I've been watching the show since the first season and have often pressed "pause" to do a quick search of this name or that name and one of the things I've found is that some of the characters may or may not have existed. Most historians aren't sure if they existed beyond Viking legends and stories or if they actually lived.

It is damn fine viewing either way...
especially Lagertha....

The show is far, far from historically accurate. I can't even conceive of where you got such a notion. It is however a very entertaining show. But not even close to historically accurate....

Ok, first off, this clown isn't a historian. He's a guy who has a video blog and likes paganism and hates Christianity. That much I got right away from him. The other thing is that right away, he says that he appreciates how it looks and brings us a view of what it was like back then. That is EXACTLY what I said in my post. Then he whined about a really irrelevant point that the Vikings would have understood the English language. I mean if you are going to say straight out like he did, that you understand they are trying to make a TV show, why are you whining about that? Then in the same vein, he bitches about the blind seer.

I stated that I liked the authentic feel of it. I said the technology and clothing was right. He did not say otherwise.

But the clothing; specifically the armor... wasn’t right. And the Vikings of that period wore very colorful garments, and were fastidiously clean, and well kempt. Not adorn in drab earth tones, constantly filthy as the show represents.

Based on what? Your opinion? The guy in your link doesn’t say that.

From historical records. You do realize that that singular video was just a minor "for instance", right?
The Bayuex tapestry is particularly informative, and heavily referenced by scholars. Not to mention the countless writings of the various monks who came into contact, and spent time with the Vikings...

Doubtful. I’m not a specialist in Vikings but I am well versed in European history, reality is different from legend, folklore and art.

Agreed, it's highly entertaining, but time-compressed to give the impression that many of the most notable events of the era were accomplished by the same group. For example, if Rollo is the progenitor of the Dukes of Normandy, he would have been nearly 140 years old(911 CE), considering that he also took part in the raid on Lindisfarne(793 CE).
The notion that the Nordic people didn't know of the land to the west is beyond absurd, as they had, had dealings with them for centuries....

That is something that your guy from the video made up. Ragnar mentions several times that he wanted to raid England, by going west.
No my friend; that’s historical fact. Known even to me, long before the video was made. Look. I like the show. But to call it historically accurate is to be grossly uninformed.

You are confused. I said that Ragnar mentions England on more than one occasion. Read my post again.

It’s as historically accurate as it needs to be, which is quite a lot and your opinions don’t change that.
"Needs to be"; for what exactly? Entertainment?

Yes exactly, for entertainment. It’s still pretty accurate, and your opinions don’t change it.

Here's a better video presentation on the matter. Albeit a bit more long winded. And this guy isn't a "Pagan", which somehow has ruffled your feathers.

Ok, I couldn’t watch too much of it because I spotted bull shit right from the get-go. First and foremost, again you are referencing video bloggers and not actual historians. I got pst that part ok then he began his complaints. His first complaint was based in a lack of common sense. He states that the Vikings were well groomed just like you have. He says that as proof, combs have been found in digs of Viking areas.

Combs.

Because everyone knows that once you comb your hair, it’ll never get messed up at all, not when you are farming the land, not when you are rowing a boat, and not when you are fighting a battle.

And of course you can’t get sweaty or muddy living off the land like they did.

And in the rest of Europe at that time only royalty or the very rich could afford the expensive dyes required to make colorful clothes but of course the Vikings had as much cash as they needed right?

Yeah, I couldn’t watch that nonsense past that.

All the history is there, and easily corroborated. It isn't hard to find. I posted videos because they're a lot more chill to watch. But if you insist on believing the fantasy, over the documented reality... That's up to you. Great show none the less...

Your videos aren’t history, they are simply a bloggers opinion. You choose to believe that nonsense, well, I can’t stop you.

I like the show for many reasons, one of those reasons is that it takes me there, to that time. I appreciate the historical accuracy.

Much too bloody for my tastes.

I would imagine it’s too bloody for most people. I don’t mind it mainly because it accurately reflects war during that age. War is hell.

That second guy knows his weapons and armor. Especially when it comes to being period correct. But I’ll leave ya to it...

I love Vikings, the TV show. I'm gonna watch ep 13 tonight, I'm a little late. I love how the show is going.

No, it's not reality, but it's great fantasy based on reality. I just wish Heahmund would speak above a growled whisper. He sounds like Batman! :)
