Vikings

My favorite part of Vikings is when they make Jon Snow the King in the North

I also enjoy the scene where Ragnar says that the best in life is to "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!"
Yeah I was sad when the twist came and it turned out that he'd been dead for the whole movie

No! You must have missed the bit after the credits where Sansa dreamed the whole thing and Ragnar was just taking a shower.

Shit. I really need to start staying for the post credits.

i don’t see a thread on it already, which is surprising actually.

This is a great show. I like that it is historically accurate; the technology, the clothing, the whole look of it. I like that it’s based on legendary norsemen and incorporates actual historical events.

It has just the right balance of drama and action. I like the characters, even the evil ones.

I loved Game of Thrones too but I think I’m enjoying Vikings a little more. GOT was a bit too heavy on the drama. It’s like a soap opera in mid-evil times. Vikings is not.

Just a warning, there is graphic violence, but hey, Vikings weren’t nice guys.

To be fair, it's as historically accurate as it can be. I've been watching the show since the first season and have often pressed "pause" to do a quick search of this name or that name and one of the things I've found is that some of the characters may or may not have existed. Most historians aren't sure if they existed beyond Viking legends and stories or if they actually lived.

It is damn fine viewing either way...

They got rid of the hottest chick on the show... The Lagertha chick must’ve felt threatened...

The show is far, far from historically accurate. I can't even conceive of where you got such a notion. It is however a very entertaining show. But not even close to historically accurate....

Ok, first off, this clown isn't a historian. He's a guy who has a video blog and likes paganism and hates Christianity. That much I got right away from him. The other thing is that right away, he says that he appreciates how it looks and brings us a view of what it was like back then. That is EXACTLY what I said in my post. Then he whined about a really irrelevant point that the Vikings would have understood the English language. I mean if you are going to say straight out like he did, that you understand they are trying to make a TV show, why are you whining about that? Then in the same vein, he bitches about the blind seer.

I stated that I liked the authentic feel of it. I said the technology and clothing was right. He did not say otherwise.

Agreed, it's highly entertaining, but time-compressed to give the impression that many of the most notable events of the era were accomplished by the same group. For example, if Rollo is the progenitor of the Dukes of Normandy, he would have been nearly 140 years old(911 CE), considering that he also took part in the raid on Lindisfarne(793 CE).
The notion that the Nordic people didn't know of the land to the west is beyond absurd, as they had, had dealings with them for centuries....

That is something that your guy from the video made up. Ragnar mentions several times that he wanted to raid England, by going west.

Lagertha is the hottest on the show.

But the clothing; specifically the armor... wasn’t right. And the Vikings of that period wore very colorful garments, and were fastidiously clean, and well kempt. Not adorn in drab earth tones, constantly filthy as the show represents.

Lagertha is the hottest on the show.
She is now. Now that they got rid of Bjorn’s girl

No my friend; that’s historical fact. Known even to me, long before the video was made. Look. I like the show. But to call it historically accurate is to be grossly uninformed.

why do they need to show violence?

Because those times were violent. I appreciate the realism.
they were not violent every day all day
like the Old Westerns were not shoot outs a lot --not nearly that much
movies/TV can never portray violence/etc realistically
it is not realism --not even close

so you enjoy watching the violence?

I didn’t say they were violent every day. AND I said “those times were violent”, and they were. They faced hardship and brutality every day from other tribes, other people, their rulers, and from nature.

And yes I do enjoy watching it.

Based on what? Your opinion? The guy in your link doesn’t say that.

You are confused. I said that Ragnar mentions England on more than one occasion. Read my post again.

It’s as historically accurate as it needs to be, which is quite a lot and your opinions don’t change that.

From historical records. You do realize that that singular video was just a minor "for instance", right?
The Bayuex tapestry is particularly informative, and heavily referenced by scholars. Not to mention the countless writings of the various monks who came into contact, and spent time with the Vikings...

"Needs to be"; for what exactly? Entertainment?

Here's a better video presentation on the matter. Albeit a bit more long winded. And this guy isn't a "Pagan", which somehow has ruffled your feathers.

^^^^^^^^^
The video above only really touches on the mode of dress, armor and hygiene of the period. It doesn’t even begin to delve into the linguistic, and historic anachronisms that plague the show from a historical stand point.
Again... A very entertaining show! Historically accurate; it is not...
