this is typical political gamesmanship. its been happening for years on both side, and whether youre a dem or repub and think we are all tired of it.

as the rules read, the speaker must acknowledge the person wishing to address to house. but like she said its at her discretion. this is where partisan politics comes into play. had she acknowledged the person wishing to speak and he invokes a filibuster, then we get gridlock again.

these were the rules as written by our founding fathers, and they will never change. you may not like them in this exact situation, but they do work both ways. this is also why the party in charge has so much power. Boehner, who is expected to be the next speaker will have the authority to so that same thing if he wishes. this is also to have some semblance of order amongst our government.

here are the rules and responsibilities of the speaker of the house:
About the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

"The Speaker exerts power over the legislative process by setting the House legislative calendar determining when bills will be debated and voted on. The Speaker often utilizes this power to help fulfill his or her responsibility of making sure bills supported by the majority party are passed by the House. "

This is one way how bills get passed and how bills get blocked. It is also the reason we have such partisan politics in this country. No one wants to work together because typically they dont have to. This started to run rampant under Bush and has continued under Obama. Now this is not necessarily only the Presidents fault, but its also the fault of every member of congress.

There is no way I can defend Nancy Pelosi because my opinion of her was shaped by her first official act as Speaker, which was to announce that, Impeachment (of George W. Bush) is off the table!" Because if any president ever deserved to be impeached, and worse, it is that sonofabitch. So the handwriting was on the wall from the day the Democrats took power.

It's been a poor attempt at pretending ever since that revealing day. And the condition of the Nation is clearly the consequence of the same shadow government that guided the criminal Bush Administration being still in charge.

I wouldn't allow a single piece of Legislation to be rammed through in this Lame Duck session. Colorado Democratic Senator Michael Bennett really did say it best..."It's all Rigged."

do you think these rules are magically going to change with Boehner in charge? just because you only recently found out this is happening doesnt mean that it hasnt been going on for decades. it just happens that someone finally caught it on tape.
