Reading comprehension on this one folks. He is not saying 9/11 (THE day) was bittersweet but the actual gathering (TOday) is. He then goes on to say that he hopes people gain comfort in recalling memories regarding their lost loved ones.

dead loved ones = bitter
memories you shared with them = sweet
