UNION THUGS Destroy & Trample AFP Tent – Rough Up Conservatives in Lansing

The people in Michigan looked around and saw that the unions weren't helping them. Michigan has an 18% unemployment rate. Detroit has 45% of it's people not in the labor force, 34.5% is on food stamps and under the teacher's union, there is a 7% literacy rate in schools. You can go to some remote village in some third world mountain and find a better than 7% literacy rate. Then, glance across the border to Indiana that has lured almost 100 companies out of Michigan to Indiana because they became a right to work state and it gets pretty clear. The unions, whatever they did that was good in the past, have long since stopped benefiting the people in the states where they exist and have now become harmful.

While your general points are correct, your numbers are simply wrong.

The Census Bureau estimates there are 563,055 people age 16 or older in the city who could potentially work and be part of the labor force. But only 54.3 percent of these — or 305,479 individuals — actually do participate in the labor force, meaning they either have a job or are looking for one.
Another 257,576 of Detroit residents age 16 or older — 45.7 percent of that demographic — do not participate in the labor force. They do not have a job, and they are not looking for one.

There are 264,209 households in Detroit, and 91,204 of them — or 34.5 percent — get food stamps.

You may find this hard to believe but Michigan is NOT just Detroit.

I live in Michigan and I am very glad to see Right to Work laws pass here. If you would have told me ten years ago we would pass this - I would say it would never happen. But unions have lost a lot of power in Michigan over the last decade - because they have slit their own throats by causing companies to go out of business or move over seas because they can't compete.

You know how many auto plants and other manufacturing plants we would still have if not for the UAW and other unions?

I also found it hilarious that on all our local news stations(even the local fox station) there was no mention of the violence and taking down of the tent and beating a reporter...they were all reporting on how relatively peaceful the demonstrations were - I wanted to throw my shoe at my TV.

I take issue with your "can't compete" statement, maybe you can say how much income and benefits we have to give up to successfully compete with Chinese and Mexican labor and how that is good for anyone other than big business owners?

Excellent question occupied! Who am I talking about them competing with? Other US companies. And yes other US non-union companies may pay less, but they pay the true market rate for labor. The non-union parts suppliers here pay anywhere from 10 to 13 an hour where union shops often times start at 13 or 14 an hour and can pay upwards of 20 an hour. That difference makes the union shops much less competitive with their American non-union counterparts.

In fact over 70 percent of lost manufacturing jobs in the US have been union, as opposed to only 30 percent of lost jobs being non-union.

Unlike many conservatives and liberals though - I am NOT a free-trader(and neither were the founding fathers) - I am all for a free market within the United States, but the US needs to protect itself from the outside.

In fact most of the US government's income (before the 16th amendment allowing for income tax was passed in 1909) used to come from tarriffs on incoming goods from other countries. The Federal government used to closely monitor other nations prices and make sure they were competititve with US prices(no price gouging from outside).

You see there was a time when US government officials understood that some other countries have much different playing fields(including cheaper labor than we do).

So unlike many Republicans(and democrats for that matter) who say "those jobs"(in reference to manufacturing jobs) " are not coming back" - I vehimently disagree. They could come back if our government had the will to take strong messasures to protect the US economy.

So basically I am for a two pronged approach - right to work so people can choose to be in union or not, and for government tarriffs on cheap labor countries like Mexico, China(just to name two). The combination of those two policies would cause manufacturing to come roaring back in the United States.

Protectionism is present in almost every other country, but the US.

Both protectionism and capitalism were blamed for the Great Depression successfully by FDR. Eventually the American people understood capitalism was not to blame, but they never removed blame from protectionism and protectionism became a swear word akin to socialism.

The reality is - neither capitalism nor protectionism were to blame, but Hoover and FDR did a lot of meddling internaly(messing with the free market within the USA) and that caused(Hoover) and extended(FDR) the Great Depression.

I think the Stock Exchange did need some additional rules, many economists today looking back on start of the Great Depression believe it would have been only a 3 to 4 year ordeal instead of over a decade had there not been so much interference in the economy(with things like price and wage fixing by FDR).

Somehow we need to remove the stigma of protectionism, and realize as you said that most other countries in the world engage in it and we are just selling ourselves out by not protecting ourselves.

I continue to marvel at the sniveling personal remarks you make about others that post here. It shows that you have a low esteem for others that have ideas and beliefs that conflict with your's. That shows a definite lack of intelligence on your part. Get the drift.

This pathetic stunt is a fail, everyone knows they knocked down their own tent.

Please explain how you accomplish that from INSIDE the tent.

The joke is on the thugs. Video evidence exists and there are probably already lawyers working on the civil law suits against the idiots. These guys are going to have to file bankruptcy before this is over.

Unions really went down with a whimper in Michigan. All depends how union membership reacts. Do a large chunk of them stop paying dues? What is the history of that in other states? No money, no influence.

Eli Manning should demand his agent work for free.

Hmmmm...you never saw this sort of thing at Tea Party protests.

The Union hacks must've bussed in some Occuturds to help in the demolition phase of their protests.
