The right to protest is under attack in Britain where their rights are more implied than enumerated in a document like ours. They have even made it a crime to walk slowly and another to ban the accused from telling juries in court the circumstance of their protest.

Right wing government leaders (in power from Europe's push back against immigration) say laws are to limit protests impact on public transit and curtail jury nullification based on protesters' goals. It looks alot like Desantis' blueprint in Florida, doesn't it?

Our government framework is much more resistant than UK's is to right wing state authoritarianism but even here it relies on a neutral court. The undermining of that could be our undoing. Is Britain erosion of freedom the the right wing blueprint?

This Basic Right Is Under Threat In Britain

LONDON (AP) — For holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants, a retiree faces up to two years in prison. For hanging a banner reading “Just Stop Oil” off a bridge, an engineer got a three-year prison sentence. Just for walking slowly down the street, scores of people have been arrested.

They are among hundreds of environmental activists arrested for peaceful demonstrations in the U.K., where tough new laws restrict the right to protest.

The Conservative government says the laws prevent extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say civil rights are being eroded without enough scrutiny from lawmakers or protection by the courts. They say the sweeping arrests of peaceful demonstrators, along with government officials labeling environmental activists extremists, mark a worrying departure for a liberal democracy.

Britain is one of the world’s oldest democracies, home of the Magna Carta, a centuries-old Parliament and an independent judiciary. That democratic system is underpinned by an “unwritten constitution” — a set of laws, rules, conventions and judicial decisions accumulated over hundreds of years. The effect of that patchwork is “we rely on self-restraint by governments," said Andrew Blick, author of “Democratic Turbulence in the United Kingdom” and a political scientist at King's College London. “You hope the people in power are going to behave themselves.”

Britain may stand alone next year in lurching to the left
For the first time it is quite possible that a majority of MEPs will be Eurosceptic right-wingers. While the European Parliament does not have much law-making power in its own right, it does exert massive influence on other EU institutions and its complexion will be a key indicator of which way the political wind is blowing across the continent.

There is no doubt that public unease about mass immigration, particularly of minority groups who show little desire to integrate into European values, is the main driver of right-wing support. Could the Schengen Agreement that renders most of Europe a single domain without internal frontiers be about to collapse? The European elections will determine that.

Yes, left wing ideas are really terrible, thats why you are seeing the embrace of right wing views all over the world. How about just admitting that your ideas have been wrong? Is that such a crazy thing to ask for?

Meh, it's just the difference between being a subject rather than a citizen.....It's never been any different there, it's just who's being persecuted at any particular time. The "Jolly" took the chunnel out of Ol England some time ago.

The immigration issue in Europe is very different than the immigration issue in the U.S.

That's because the Europeans and the Arabs have been at war with each other since the beginning of history, at least. There have been no ongoing wars between the U.S. and Latin America. What wars there were, were all caused by U.S. aggression.

Also, there is a huge cultural divide between Europeans and Arabs that's mostly based on religion. There are no huge cultural divides between Americans and Latin Americans. Both are Christian cultures.

The right wing in both Europe and the U.S. promotes the idea that each other's immigration issues are the same. They are not.

Yes its true but you also need to note the following.

Almost all of this has happened in the last few years as a reaction to failing conservative polcies.

They are getting more and more desperate to stop all opposition to the government,

Also its worth noting the growing influence of american nut job groupings who fund much of their "thinking". We even have a group now of tories who promote large families whilst cutting tax breaks for families..

The most recent nonsense is the Rwanda bill. They want to send immigrants to Rwanda. It ended in the courts who decided that Rwanda is not a safe country.
So they have introduced a bill that states Rwanda is safe. Thats it. Its an incredible piece of legislation.

Right wingers have been losing elections for decades in this country. They are aided with the bias of the electoral college and gerrymandering galore in the country. Im not disputing the legality of the electoral college, just that it favors the right wing country bumpkins. The rise of right wingers in Europe is anti immigration based not a forfeiture of rights vote, which is really what is happening.

Sounds very much like the GOP here. The GOP has become an entertainment organization whereas the democrats remain a liberal policy organization.

You have no "conservative" party or policies....The Tories are even bigger sellout pussies than Murican republicans.

This shit is all on neo-Marxist goobers like you.

So, what was the guy doing when he was holding the sign? Was the person who hung the banner off the bridge violating a law when he did that? The reason I ask is because, the one thing I have read about, makes me question the other two. The one I read about, that the article so slyly puts it is “people were arrested for walking slowly down the street” when it should have read “people were arrested for walking slowly IN the street”. Likely, they were doing what you see in America, where people were walking slowly in the street, holding up traffic and forcing their protests on other people. To that I say…yeah, they should be arrested. That’s disturbing the peace, and probably violating other traffic laws, and when the officers come and ask them to get out of the street, they just ignore the officer or don’t follow instructions and then they get arrested.

I don’t see the problem here. Moral of the story….stay out of the streets…

Republicans have won more elections than they've lost since Reagan.

They can't sell out to fascist fucktards like you fast enough, and y'all still whine and cry about how you can't get your way.

When youre only selling point is to buy off poor communities in order to get their vote, then your ideas fucking suck. Conservatives have been beating dems in elections for DECADES by simply having good, sane ideas.

You bought your votes from an uninformed population; we earned our votes by just being "right".

There is an old saying in law that,

"Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose"

A protest that routinely and maliciously blocks traffic, causes property damage, or even turn violent is not a legal protest in view of this idea.

You don't have the right to prohibit the movements of your fellow citizens, to damage their property, or to do them harm.

If you are arrested and charged with committing those offenses, the court is not obligated to give you a soapbox from which to spout your ideology if such ideology isn't relevant to the crime.

If you smash a shop window, you will be charged and tried for smashing the window and it matters not if you smashed the window to "Save the Whales".
