UK election results: David Cameron pledges a 'greater Britain'
David Cameron has promised to lead a government for "one nation" and make "Great Britain greater" as he returned to Downing Street as prime minister.

Speaking outside No 10 after visiting Buckingham Palace, he said the UK was "on the brink of something special".

The Conservatives have 331 seats - five more than needed for a Commons majority - their first such victory since 1992.

Mr Cameron's rivals Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage have all resigned after election disappointment.

The Conservative leader is now beginning the process of putting together the new government, which will have a parliamentary majority of 12. George Osborne has been reappointed as chancellor.

Mr Cameron said he would reach out to all parts of the UK and strive to "bring the country together" in the wake of the SNP's election landslide in Scotland - where it won 56 of the 59 seats.

In other election developments:

With all 650 seats declared, the Conservatives have ended up with 331 seats in the House of Commons, 24 more than in 2010. Labour have 232, the Lib Dems 8, the SNP 56, Plaid Cymru 3, UKIP 1, the Greens 1 and others 19.
The Conservatives get a 36.9% share of the UK national vote, Labour 30.4%, UKIP 12.6%, the Lib Dems 7.9%, the SNP 4.7%, the Green Party 3.8% and Plaid Cymru 0.6%.
Ed Miliband steps down after a "difficult and disappointing" night for Labour which saw Ed Balls lose and Jim Murphy and Douglas Alexander defeated by the SNP
Nick Clegg said he would quit as leader after a "crushing" set of losses, which saw Vince Cable, Danny Alexander, David Laws, Simon Hughes and Charles Kennedy among a slew of Lib Dem casualties
Nigel Farage has quit as UKIP leader after failing to be elected - although he may stand in the ensuing leadership contest. He has recommended Suzanne Evans take over as interim leader
George Galloway, who was reported to the police for retweeting an exit poll before voting ended, has lost to Labour in Bradford West
Conservative minister Esther McVey was the highest-profile Tory loser, defeated by Labour in Wirral West as Boris Johnson returned to the Commons
The Green Party gets one seat after Caroline Lucas retains the Brighton Pavilion constituency she won in 2010

Good bye Farage, and to most of his gang of homophobic, racist, UKIP losers.

Also Galloway's rants won't be missed either for sure.

Galloway's rants, lol

"There are so many political scalps I was pleased to see taken.

Ed Balls, perhaps THE most odious of all Labour senior command, lost his seat,

George Galloway, the UK’s foremost cat impersonator and all round pal of tyrants everywhere, also fell in Bradford West,

Vince Cable, that most sanctimonious old humbug, was washed away as were Simon Hughes. Charles Kennedy and Ed Davey.

This now means the LibDems have 8 MP’s and yet 100 representatives in the Lords.

I was disappointed UKIP did not win more seats but they received 3.8 million votes, making them the 3rd in the number of votes cast.

I was not surprised that the SNP have won Scotland in such an unprecedented fashion. Their Syriza “anti-Austerity” fantasy politics seems to have created a cult in Scotland and since it not anchored in any economic reality, it will end badly.

All in all, a fascinating election."

But despite the unexpectedly decisive result, more uncertainty looms over whether Britain will stay in the European Union - and even hold together as a country.

Scottish nationalists swept aside Labour, meaning that Scotland, which voted just a year ago to stay in the United Kingdom, will send just three representatives of major British parties to parliament and be all but shut out of the cabinet. That could revive calls for it to leave Britain.

Don't overlook that The SNP is a peacenik outfit that wants Britain to have no nuclear defenses. If they achieve independence what's left of the country will have to either give up all nuclear submarines or find a new base for them. End result? More dependence on the very unreliable United States in the event Putin decides to take another scalp or two.

India is a commonwealth country. It has plenty of nuclear weapons. I am sure it will help UK in the hour of need. So, please sleep tight. No need for worry.

In the mean time, WTF is this ?

LONDON: Indian students studying in various British universities have received letters from local councils asking them to register to vote, failing which they would have to pay a fine of £80 (nearly Rs 8000).

Britain will hold its general parliamentary election on Thursday.

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who's registered to vote. This is usually maintained by the 300 plus strong local councils.

This appeared in an Indian newspaper so I can see why they pitched it solely to Indian students. The fact is that everyone who receives a request for registration information from their local electoral registration office is legally bound to respond, although they can abstain from voting.

The law actually states:

It is a legal requirement for residents to respond to the annual canvass form and supply the Electoral Registration Officer with information so that he can publish a Register of Electors.

During the annual canvass, forms are sent to all residents within the borough and it is a legal requirement for these forms to be returned.

The Electoral Registration Officer is required by Section 10 of the Representation of the Peoples Act 1983 to conduct an annual canvass for the purposes of ascertaining any persons who are entitled to be registered.

Under Regulation 23 of the Representation of the Peoples Regulations 2001, the Electoral Registration Officer may require any person to supply information required for the purposes of their duty to maintain the register.

The penalty for failure to return the form is £1,000 and the penalty for giving false information is £5,000.

I'd forgotten I'd posted on here.

But watching The Queen's Speech today, I was struck by the anti Tory bias from the BBC.

And did the provisional Labour Party leader what ever her name is, have to grimace when congratulating the PM on his tenure? So unbecoming.

Will there ever be a decent Labour Party to grace the Chamber, again?

Seems to me Nicola Sturgeon is more of a threat to them than David Cameron.

I'm sitting in a pub in North Yorkshire as I write...

Spent several days visiting a long- time Liberal Democrat politician who was almost in tears at what his party has become. His feeling is that those deserting the party will largely hold their noses and go Tory, at least for now. He, too, sees SNP as destroying Labour as far as being effective in any near-term by-election and shudder that some deserting Labour in England are leaning UKIP as they are fed up with unrestricted immigration

Cameron's going to have a rough 5 years and now is going to have to make good of his promised in-out EU election while also coming to grips with "the West Lothian" question...too complex to explain here but anyone over 12 who is interested will know how to "Google" it.
