Kurds in Turkey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During the 1970s, the separatist movement coalesced into the Marxist-Leninist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). From 1984 to 1999, the Turkish military was embroiled in a conflict with the PKK. The village guard system was set up and armed by the Turkish state around 1984 to combat the PKK. The militia comprises local Kurds and it has around 58,000 members. Some of the village guards are fiercely loyal to the Turkish state, leading to infighting among Kurdish militants.[19]

Much of the countryside in the southeast was depopulated, with Kurdish civilians moving to local defensible centers such as Diyarbakır, Van, and Şırnak, as well as to the cities of western Turkey and even to western Europe. The causes of the depopulation included PKK atrocities against Kurdish clans they could not control, the poverty of the southeast, and the Turkish state's military operations.[20] Human Rights Watch has documented many instances where the Turkish military forcibly evacuated villages, destroying houses and equipment to prevent the return of the inhabitants. An estimated 3,000 Kurdish villages in Turkey were virtually wiped from the map, representing the displacement of more than 378,000 people.[21]

The apotheosis of this conflict was during the 1990s, when the National Security Council sanctioned a covert war using the special forces, village guards, mafia, and contract killers. With such an unsavory cast of characters, the conflict soon wheeled out of control, resulting in the Susurluk scandal. The conflict tapered off after the capturing of the PKK's leader, Abdullah Öcalan.

Indeed. Its sad to note that you only care about the murder of hundreds of thousands because you can use it as ammunition to justify Israeli murdering activists on the freedom flotilla.

That Turkey has done terrible things in its past does not justify Israeli injustices.

Turkey has various projects to equal infrastructural and socio-economical standards of South-East to rest of Turkey.

Other financing proceeds normal with Province Reconciliation Payments, for normal duties of Provinces and Municipalities.
There are no villages "wiped from map" in Turkey, those effected villages have been recosntructed and socio-economic policy is to equal the living standard of South-East to that of other regions.

For people that had to flee during climax of PKK-Terror there exists financed Village return programs. Just read the EU commission's report.
If there are wrongs in history, it counts to advance wrongs into goods.
That can be said of Turkey, the will is there.
That can not be said for Israel.

More on Turkey atrocities.

Turkey is one of the worst human rights abusers.

Kurds: Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity

During its repression of the PKK, which it labeled counterinsurgency operations, Turkey declared a state of emergency in parts of its southeastern (Kurdish) territory. According to the Human Rights Watch Turkey committed "gross violation of its international commitments to respect the laws of war" (1995, p. 7). This included forced displacements, indiscriminate shootings, summary executions, and disguising the identity of perpetrators, as well as violations of international law, including summary execution, torture, forcible displacement of civilians, pillage, destruction of villages, failure to care for civilians displaced by government forces, injury of civilians, destruction of civilian property, inhumane and degrading treatment, kidnaping of civilians to act as porters and as human shields against attack, disappearances, life-threatening conditions of detention and inadequate medical attention leading to death. The Human Rights Watch also noted that the United States, Turkey's close ally and its major weapons supplier, was deeply implicated, and, much like NATO, chose to "downplay Turkish violations for strategic reasons" (1995, p. 13). It also charged that the PKK, which was not party to the Geneva Protocols, also engaged in "substantial violations of the laws of war," including "summary executions, indiscriminate fire and the intentional targeting of non-combatants" (1995, pp. 12–13).

During the operations, according to a Turkish parliamentary commission, the armed forces displaced 378,335 villagers while destroying or evacuating 3,428 rural settlements (905 villages and 2,523 hamlets) from the mid-1980s to 1997. These figures are generally treated as underestimations. The Turkish security forces further destroyed the infrastructure of rural life in the Kurdish region, and thus threatened the survival of the Kurds as a distinct people. Other crimes included systematic sexual violence against women in custody.

Oh I am not at all justifying the Israeli soldiers defending themselves.

  • Israel had every justification to:
  • Have a blockade in order to keep missiles from being smuggled in that are shot at Israeli cities
  • To board the terrorist ship when they refused to go to the Israeli port to unload the supposed aid
  • To defend themselves when attacked by Turkey's terrorists

What I am stating is the fact of Turkey's atrocities against the kurds and their flagrant violations of human rights.

PULEASE I could care less what the UN or the EU think.

The UN voted to put Libya, and Iran on their human rights councils :cuckoo:

What next putting on Turkey a gross violater of human rights as well?

From 550 available parliament seats, the Kurdist "Democratic Society Party" could only win 22 seats:

I have always been concerned about the Kurds in Turkey, However this is irrelevant to this crises at hand.

Turkey has committed genocide against the Kurds.

What the UN or other international bodies who are made up of terrorist states such as Turkey is irrelevant.

This is what the Israeli soldiers had to put up with...

Turkey is one of the worst offenders of human rights. It's an outlaw state, in region filled with other outlaw and terrorist states.

Turkey has been elected with 151 votes of 192 into UN:
Turkish officials hail Turkey's United Nations Security Council seat

Israel would probably only get 2 votes:
- USA
- Germany

The terrorist is not Turkey. We are fully integrated into world, no outlaw state.
 Probably because Iran and Libya are on the human rights council.

A UN endorsement is a condemnation, nothing to be proud of.

Turkey's ass should be kicked out of NATO, so they can join their axis of evil with Iran, Syria, and North Korea.

"Axis of Evil" is trademark of Israel, with Israel being the gravity center of it.
Travel the world, you will know.

Turkey has become an extreme Islamic state and is trying to provoke a war,

No. Its not.

And the fact that you have to go back to the 70's is a pretty damn good example of why its not when you have current atrocities committed by states like Iran, Burma, North Korea, etc, etc.

Christ. Human rights violations are actually a serious topic. Try to avoid putting your personal petty little bullshit vendettas into every little topic out there. You give a shit about human rights? Why the fuck aren't you condemning 9 dead activists? Why aren't you condemning torture by the US? Why aren't you condemning the Israeli attack on Lebanon?
