Turkey shoots down Russian jet

Phoenall, et al,

If I was the Russians, I would:

• Recall all diplomatic personnel from Turkey; and after the recovery begin to:

• Reverse the decision to cancel a gas pipeline to Bulgaria. (Considered an important victory for Ankara).
• Disrupt the opportunities for Turkish food makers are seeing for boosting their exports.
• To the extent possible, cut all communications conduits between and through Russia.
• Block all travel, to and from, Turkey and Russia.
• Forfeit and terminate all aspects of the agreement to build a nuclear power plant on the Mediterranean coast ($20B).
• Exploit Turkey’s dependence on Russian energy.
• Begin to openly fund and provide advanced assistance and safe haven to PPK (Kurdish rebels) elements within Russia and Syria.
• Move as many ADA units and Air Surveillance Assets to the Turkish-Russian Border with Russian air cover.
• Begin the deployment of Cruise Missile assets with targeting emphasis in the Turkish AF facilities.

(COMMENT)

The Russians should be concentrating economic and military plans that inflict the greatest harm on Turkey. The Russians should run every military exercise right on the Turkish Border. Every aircraft that takes-off in Turkey should hear Russian Target Acquisition RADAR sweep them.

Most Respectfully,
R

They also claim to have downed a helicopter sent to the area of the downed aircraft.

Shot down by a supposedly 'obsolete' F-16 by the way, according to the Turks, anyway. One of the pilots survived, according to the latest news I heard an hour or so ago. And no ISIS in that area according to the locals; the Russians weren't after ISIS, despite Putin's claims to the contrary over the last couple of days. The POS is claiming to be 'outraged n stuff'. Hope he has a stroke.

I despise Turkey, but I don't see Putin gaining anything from all that, as it would only exacerbate the problem of propping up Syria; Turkey has been fairly neutral re keeping out of attacking Syria directly, and such act would be a game changer and open up a can of worms for Putin that he can't handle at the moment. Russia isn't in any position to escalate the situation. militarily.

Picaro, et al,

I don't think that the Russian Federation has anything to gain by allowing the Republic of Turkey (RoT) to attack a SU-24 Fighter-Bomber on a counterterrorism mission against a regional threat.

It appears that the RoT (intimidated and coerced, afraid of DAESH or a radicalized Islamic response) would rather hinder than assist anti-DAESH Forces. That is very suspect and potential dangerous to the region. If RoT is so afraid of DAESH that it would intercept allied aircraft on a mission, then we need to channel terrorist forces towards them; as the RoT serves no useful purpose as an ally against such a force.

You have to ask yourself why our nation, the Russian Federation, or any country would be interested in neutralizing the threat posed by DAESH in a far-off land. If you have no reasonable answer, then of course you are correct. Pinning down the RoT would only "exacerbate the problem." But if there is a legitimate reason for worrying about the establishment of a pseudo-government creating sanctuaries for the growth of radicalize Islam which threatens to change the basic western freedoms; then we need to focus their attention on a threat they do recognize.

If DAESH continues to accumulate victories and seize territory in the region, the strength grow. It will become a Mecca for every wannabe insurgent, jihadists and asymmetric fighter; mistakenly believing their cause is just and a religious certainty.

My reasoning is Russia's borders aren't that secure, relatively, and any big escalation by Russia in one region will allow some of its Muslim majority 'client states' all across its southern tier an opportunity to cause problems, something Russia is ill equipped to handle; most are currently bullied by Russia and not really willing members of the 'Russian Federation' in any real sense outside of intimidation. Putin doesn't have the luxury of unlimited military and economic clout and is already approaching failed state status, low energy prices, internal corruption, etc., etc, all converge to limit what Russia can do against Turkey, just for the sake of maintaining its last remaining overseas base there in Syria. Putin is mainly just bluffing now as it is.

Must be a Turkey shoot.....

the good news is that the pilots bailed
They say they found a dead pilot. A person dead due to politics....

People die all the time. Cry me a river

-Geaux

Yeah, and US presidents send people to their deaths all the time, HOOOORAAAAHHH!! Time to celebrate hey? We're makers of deaths. And pro-lifers at the same time.....

Boots on the ground is the only answer.

Actually it isn't the only answer.

The US really needs to step back from this and allow others to do it. If the US gets involved it will probably just end up as it always has done, with more people angry, more problems in the region and not less.

The US thought it was going in as Liberators, in reality very few in the region saw it that way. If you don't understand the people, then you're going to have problems.

You get the point, there are millions of different individual conflicts going on, and Russia/Turkey is just another to add to the pie.

This is all good; the animals are focused on butchering each other for a change, and that is a plus. The shame is the West not doing enough to aid the really oppressed in those countries and instead are pandering to Muslims, i.e. just backasswards policy, on top of arming Iran with nukes. Pure idiocy.

All dictators eventually collapse; keeping the collateral damage from spreading is sane policy. The real issue for Americans is how much more will Obama screw up as a lame duck with a year or so left to work on enthusiastically spreading the violence and death to Europe and the U.S. We know Hillary and Lurch are completely incompetent re foreign policy and dealing with reality, so no sanity apparent in that direction.

The US doesn't give a damn about the repressed. It only cares about its own self interest.

Britain has up to 12 Typhoon warplanes - designed for air-to-air combat - on standby to support Turkey in any revenge attack by Putin's forces. Home | Daily Mail Online
Why would they do this.....plane was clearly in Syria, thus the shoot down is nothing but a provocation.....Turkey should get some ass kicking from Nato talking heads instead of UK plunging into madness
