Pennsylvania's violent crime rate is below the national median.

The Suburbs outside of Philadelphia, which share the exact same culture as Philadelphia, have nearly identical politics, and a higher standard of living.... has well below Pennsylvania violent crime averages.

Cheltenham PA, is safer than 44 % of the cities in the USA, that statistic is matched or exceeded ONLY by other suburbs.

Elkins Park is statistically only slightly less safe than Cheltenham, and has a slightly higher standard of living, and is a little deeper into the suburbs, well into the "shade" of Oak and evergreen trees lol

And you want to know why ?
Because we don't take any shit of off nobody.

While Pennsylvania is the Mid atlantic, and technically NOT the northeast... Pennsylvania has the best healthcare in the entire country.

Why ?

Several reasons.

We don't have just "Blue Cross Blue Shield" insurance that exists in other states... we have "Independence Blue Cross and Blue Shield" its legally a separate system, that is higher quality coverage.

We're also hospital city.
Every other giant building is a over the max hospital, and University hospital.
:)

We also have the highest standards in the country for becoming a doctor or a nurse, and we have doctors from Canada, and Europe as well.

Let's not forget Pittsburgh, rated one of America's Most Livable Cities. Cheap housing, decent wages, superb education/healthcare, a low cost of living, and an expanding economy. Go Steelers! lol

I've been to Philly. It's a violent shit hole and full of crooked politicians.
I been to the south, right now at this time, I am in the south.
Its a more violent, higher crime area of the country... with the most bigotry, most greed, and worst health in the country, and as dumb as a box of rocks, after they been rounded.

And you want to know why its more violent ?

Because the people in the south are fucking wusses that refuse to handle their own shit... and when they do get what they want... the cops.... they execute everybody.
:)

no jobs....

That's changing as well. We have a 5% unemployment and have been below the national average for years.

Ah, this is interesting, since you're talking about where I grew up.

Bullshit factor: Mixed.
"we don't take no shit off [sic] nobody" is absolutely true. Even correctly colloquialized.
I've always said wherever I go -- I'm not afraid of this place; I'm from Philadelphia". :D
It's a badge you wear proudly that the young attorney who jumped in on a snowball barrage against the despised Dullass Cowgirls football team went on to become the mayor (and governor).

Hospital city -- also true. Although at this point the post starts to read like an advertisement.
Equally true could be said University city. "Big Five" and all that.

Politics in the northern burbs being the same as the city-- Bullshit. The city's (usually) way more corrupt. Also city goes Democratic; burbs lean Republican.

Finally would just like to add this note for the gadflies...

Elkins Park and Cheltenham are black.

How did Philadelphia become known as Killadelphia?

Easy pun. We call the highway on the west side the "surekill distressway" (for "Schuylkill Expressway") but it's no worse than most road arteries. Except it's too old and too small any more.

Well, it seems there are jobs there, just no high paying ones.

That isn't exactly accurate either. I can assure you businesses in the city are desperate for IT folks, health care professionals, and accountants.

How about links to back your claims?

A friend who lives there refers to it as Filty-delphia and says the local government is way beyond merely corrupt.

Sure has nothing to do with Wilmington Delaware, home to most of America's big corporations; and the Dupont family and its many offshoots living in the Philadelphia suburbs with their employees packing into places like Westchester. Philly is a pig sty.

Natives have always called it "Philthadelphia". Again, convenient pun, regardless the actual condition of the place. Especially after a Mummers parade. That's an embarrassment we won't even talk about. :eusa_shhh:

Which btw cleaned up dramatically between the eras of Rizzo and Rendell.

Btw the proper pronunciation is "Fluffya". Think Chris Matthews.

No, it sure doesn't. Elkins Park and Cheltenham are a hell of a long way from Wilmington. Not a commute anybody would want to make.

The suburbs of Philly are tending downwards. They used to have a completely independent culture and politics. But the people from the city moved to the suburbs to escape the crap they created and brought their corruption with them.

healthcare and violence have zero correlation

You must have not been from there. My people moved from the city to the suburbs 57 years ago. Nobody went there to "escape the crap". They went there for space that cities don't have.

I grew up there and that's exactly whats been happening for several decades. People leave fleeing violence and other crappy conditions and bring the same habits with them.

but hey what do I know about violent crime in the Philadelphia area. It's only kept me employed the last decade.

I am looking forward to you providing evidence of a correlation between the number of hospital beds and the crime rate. This is a criminology theory of which I am thoroughly unfamiliar.

I don't suppose you have noticed a correlation between the poverty rate and the crime rate, have you?
