My family lived very near the border town of Laredo when I was growing up, Flacaltenn. We lived in a house we rented half of from a multiple-generation Mexican family. They were gentry, sided with the Texicans against Santa Ana and later, Pancho Villa. AT one time, that house was the only sign of human habitation in Bruni, Texas. Nobody really wanted to live in a desert where the cactus grow head-high and it hurts if your big brother pushes you into one. Honest. There were about 200 people grades 1-12 at the time, probably about 15 in my grade and half were Latinos. Most of them were like kids everywhere else. There was no racism there, and Dad saw to it that 3 black kids who lived 25 miles out in the sticks got to come to that school because they had nothing for them in Aguilares, which was a town that if you blinked when you passed through it, you missed the whole thing. I have no idea what it's like 58 years later. Haven't been back through there for a long many years. Oh, we had to leave, because the school board didn't like my Dad who was superintendent educating black kids. At least, they got the better part of a year of education under their belts while Dad was there. Dad sent us kids and mom back to Houston where I spent the last 6 weeks of the school year at Galena Park School in Houston. The next year, we went back to a little town ninety miles south of San Antonio. Our house was in back of the school campus, separated by a huge field. There were a few Latinos there, too. Great people, but mostly shy. They were hugely amazed when I screamed when a spider jumped onto my desk. I'd never lived in spider country before, so it was funny to them. The next day a kid showed up with a tarantula. aaaak! But the constitution says people who can prove they are fleeing danger can ask for asylum.
These people are fleeing CRIME AND POVERTY created by narco thugs in charge of their country.. There is very little discretion as to who suffers down there. THEY ALL DO... And in a lot of the kids coming with moms are already entangled in that crime and drug racket.. THAT's NOT ASYLUM issue... THAT'S REFUGEE issue. And REFUGEE crises need to be handled differently and NO ONE in Washington is even TALKING about refugee camps...
This is why only 15% or so of those that APPLY for Asylum make it as far as a hearing.. And only 60% of that 15% EVER SHOW for their asylum hearing once they're roaming free in interior USA...

I spent an hour explaining the exorbitant price of education against this nation and why it's twice as expensive to teach and train children from two countries. Most of us have no idea the lengths teachers must now go to ensure that border crosser children receive equal education to our own. This requires hiring bilingual specialists, social workers, and teachers in grade schools with master's and phd degrees in multiple language arts and sciences. Teachers HAVE TO TREAT EVERYBODY EQUALLY. Meals must be provided for hungry children now. Some smaller towns just can't afford more teachers, so some schools have to have teachers with grit to double their load of responsibility for keeping laws passed in favor for children of all backgrounds. The social behaviors counsellors to integrate the border crossing kids to American schools contributes to the smooth running of schools with many problems. Then, I accidently hit the "refresh" button on my computer that erased all that two hours I spent researching. So I'll just post the link hope you can figure it out for yourself.
My conclusion is that we cannot afford the four million illegals crossing the border each year (sometimes many more). Please know I love people, but Mexico is using our country to bolster its economy without giving their "pisanos" as they call them assistance. That's why the flood is pushing here. The Mexicans get paid when the people send money back home. Figure out how that works.
Here's just a little bit from the above link, but trust me, everyone here needs to read it and half of the ones who've posted might not come back, so it's too bad people do not understand our fiscal responsibilities to our nations newest children:
Below are several approaches used to converge on the number of illegals entering on a yearly basis:We seem to be getting 4,000,000 per year now, according to the link here: Numbers of illegal aliens in the U.S. by Fred Elbel - THE AMERICAN RESISTANCE FOUNDATION - Information on illegal immigration numbers
Table I summarizes calculations used by these three approaches.
- Official Border Patrol statistics stated that in 2001 there were 1,676,438 total U.S. border apprehensions.6 If one out of four were apprehended as the Border Patrol officially states, that would mean that in the year 2001, 5 million illegals entered and evaded apprehension (1,676,438 x 3). Table I summarizes illegal entries at various apprehension rates.
- Official Border Patrol statistics stated that in 2002 there were 955,310 total U.S. border apprehensions6 (this is significantly lower than apprehensions in 2000 and 2001). With a one out of four apprehension rate, then in the year 2002, 2.9 million illegals would have entered and evaded apprehension (955,310 x 3).
- Official Border Patrol statistics stated that there were 888,480 total U.S. border apprehensions from January 1, 2004 to June 30, 2004.6 If one out of four were apprehended, then in the year 2004, 2.7 million illegals entered and evaded apprehension in that six month period (888,480 x 3). Assuming that a similar number of illegals enter in each six month period, this works out to 5.3 million per year. Table I summarizes calculations used by these three approaches.
Table I
Gross estimates of numbers of illegals entering and evading apprehension yearly.
(millions of illegal aliens per year)
Apprehension rate 2001 2002 2004
1 out of 4 (official Border Patrol rate) 5.0 2.9 5.3
1 out of 7 10.1 5.7 10.7
No country willingly solves a refugee and humanitarian crisis for ENTIRE REGION by just ignoring their borders and immigration laws.. And THIS is different than in 2002 and 2005... Mexican immigrants wanted temporary work.. Left most of their families in Mexico.. BECAUSE of the diff in cost of living -- it was smarter to DO THAT.. Sending home $300 a week made their families in Mexico WEALTHY and happy...
But escaping from narco-thug dictators and lawlessness and degrading economies in CENTRAL AMERICA is not the same.. It's a massive humanitarian / refugee crisis that is being ignored by feuding partisan tribes who want to WAIT YEARS for elections so the "credit" for fixing anything is theirs..
Need to DEPORT both parties and start making Congress an INDEPENDENT body again. With real freedom of thought and action for each representative.. Not 531 members who are leashed and muzzled by FOUR party bosses...
WillMunny did you ever live near the border in a border state? I'm here to tell you, it's not a really rich area for people to live in. The water resources are not wonderful, and there are miles and miles of nothing but Cactus and Mesquite trees. At certain times of year, there are quail and javolina out there, but not a lot of game to speak of that's not pig meat or birds like the quail that have about 1/10 the meat of a chicken breast as I recollect. Some ranches had longhorns, others didn't. The kind of money it takes to run a school nowadays is not enough to educate 300 citizen children and 3,000 Latinos who cannot speak English and lived in homes where the family served meals every other day and nothing every other day. All that's different now except the costs. Schools are required by state now to treat everyone exactly the same, to feed hungry children, and to give them (noncitizen children) the same opportunities to learn as citizen's children. They can't afford a Spanish teacher who does nothing else. The regular teachers have to spend their summers training for many new avenues of learning--computers, and so much expensive stuff I don't see how they make it.
There are border issues here people who sit in a skyscraper typing out financial papers may never figure out.
You can't squeeze water out of a rock. Neither should you expect regular people trying to make a living from a hard land take care of Mexico's stubborn insistence on sending 10% of their population for us to feed, clothe, medicate, educate, and accept as brothers. So cuss me all you like, but I see things a little better than you on some things, and I give myself to charity every day making quilts for little babies who don't have a daddy to pay for its needs. My goal is 100 quilt tops a year, my production rate is 50-75 a year. This year I can't do as many because I'm an older American, and my ankles are all swollen up if I sit too long at the sewing machine. So I have to take 2 naps a day with my feet elevated 12" to keep the swelling down along with ghastly medicines.
We come here to resolve issues between states who don't know what we face in a border state. The Latinos I know are hard-working, productive folks. The ones they're sending across the borders today are too many drug pushers, killers, thieves, and cheating shysters you don't want to know. Look at the statistics pages some day on these issues. You'll see.
