Typically, the Democrats nominate a weak feel-good candidate to run against a Republican incumbent. (Even Bill Clinton only got 40% of the vote in 1992.) Sometimes this is necessary to teach a lesson to their fruit flies about nominating an electable candidate the next election.

You are talking about a sacrificial lamb? That's the political name, if I understand it correctly, for any pol who is a weak candidate but they need SOMEONE to stand for election against the shoo-in incumbent, or it looks like there is no opposition at all.

I think you are making quite a good point. If Trump is strong in 2020, the Dems may well nominate a sacrificial lamb. Or, as you say, someone really unelectable to show their "fruit flies" that grossly radical people like Warren are not a good idea.
