Republicans were once free traders. Now they're isolationists. Republicans were once deficit hawks. Now they're passing spending bills that would make FDR blush and wince.
Republicans were once hardliners on Russia. Now they clamor to support it and its notorious leader Putin.

How did that tectonic shift happen? Trump.

What Svengali trick is Trump playing on the formally rock-ribbed base to make them shed their agenda to embrace something that, here to fore, was anathema to them?

Is Trump really that good of a salesman? Does he wield so much power among the GOP that they can all kiss their previously held convictions for his sake?

Why have the Republicans, who recently went through a purge of ideological purity with the Tea Party and the 'Freedom Caucus' give in to Trump's professional wrestler style of charisma?

Is there a bridge too far? We might have hoped Trump's whacky campaign would have provided a whiff of smelling salts. He attacked Mexicans, American judges who are of Mexican descent, Gold Star families, POWs, the disabled, women, and the electoral system itself.

Since his election, he has chided those protesting Nazis and White Supremists and drawing a moral equivalence between those protesting hate and hate itself, separated children from their families as a point of policy and now disavowed the word of his own intelligence community as well as both houses of congress to side with the Kremlin.

One might further hope that somewhere along this line of arrogance, incompetence, naïveté and lack of intellectual curiosity some of the Republicans might get a whiff of the smelling salts of decency and wake up from this hex cast on them by a huckster buffoon.

Well you know what it means, right?

Republicans never had any morals or principles. Neither did democrats. They all just say whatever shit will get them elected. That's why they're in power. Truly principled people don't get elected. They get destroyed by some phony like Liz Warren or a blowhard know-nothing like the president.

You have missed the blur of motion in your peripheral. Turn around. Slowly. See that? It's the Democrats' six decade ride on the radical Leftist cultural revolution reflecting in the DNC's mirror. While our commander in chief is one hell of a leader, all the spun-for-your-benefit behavioral shifts you note, are Paleoconservative reaction to the hideous fallacies and treasonous acts resulting from Vanguard cultural revolution politic and committed by radical Left think tank tar pit escapees. Your radical Left socio-postmodern-Jacobite-elitist clinically indifferent to all human life and contradictory to all aspects of patriotism, alone, has caused mass American migration away from your side, and embrace of our President's charismatic rope-a-dope philosophy of leadership. The answer to your questions is in the mirror.

So the Republicans could not find a standard bearer who championed their cause and settled on Donald Trump? No Cruz, Rubio, Kasich or Bush could fulfill the brief? You selected Trump based on style and nothing else. He had no ideological record no political record, no experience at all.

All that bluster about free trade, open markets, budget controls and foreign adversaries was what, Republican dinner theater?

You chose Trump and he was telling you precisely what he was all about for months. Principle? Ideology? Where did your priorities go?

Why are you talking about me? I didn't vote for him.

The answer is, most people don't have ideals. They care about themselves, their families, and that's it. Everyone else can get fucked. Most Trump supporters are scared of foreigners and dark people. That's the only motivation they needed. Oh, and their obsession with abortion.

I fail to see how championing equal rights for all Americans can be considered treasonous while Trump acts in service of our adversary is considered patriotic.

Words have shifted. Free press is now the enemy of the people. Allies are now foes. And equality is now treason.

And Trump has nothing to do with this topsy-turvy flip flop among the hardest of the hard core Conservatives? What potion did he concoct to make thinking itself an excerise in befuddlement?

I read every word. WTF? Out of character for this forum. Lots of words. Prefer you didn't highlight clever word play. Who is this guy?

Principle? Ideology? Where did your priorities go?
I assume you're talking about the priorities of conservatives who voted for Trump. I think they abandoned their priorities when the press nominated Trump to head the Republican party. They thought getting Trump nominated would ensure a Clinton victory. But the Republicans said "Oh yeah, eat this!" and elected him anyway. Most of them know he's a dangerous idiot and just won't admit it.
