Republicans were once free traders. Now they're isolationists. Republicans were once deficit hawks. Now they're passing spending bills that would make FDR blush and wince.
Republicans were once hardliners on Russia. Now they clamor to support it and its notorious leader Putin.
How did that tectonic shift happen? Trump.
What Svengali trick is Trump playing on the formally rock-ribbed base to make them shed their agenda to embrace something that, here to fore, was anathema to them?
Is Trump really that good of a salesman? Does he wield so much power among the GOP that they can all kiss their previously held convictions for his sake?
Why have the Republicans, who recently went through a purge of ideological purity with the Tea Party and the 'Freedom Caucus' give in to Trump's professional wrestler style of charisma?
Is there a bridge too far? We might have hoped Trump's whacky campaign would have provided a whiff of smelling salts. He attacked Mexicans, American judges who are of Mexican descent, Gold Star families, POWs, the disabled, women, and the electoral system itself.
Since his election, he has chided those protesting Nazis and White Supremists and drawing a moral equivalence between those protesting hate and hate itself, separated children from their families as a point of policy and now disavowed the word of his own intelligence community as well as both houses of congress to side with the Kremlin.
One might further hope that somewhere along this line of arrogance, incompetence, naïveté and lack of intellectual curiosity some of the Republicans might get a whiff of the smelling salts of decency and wake up from this hex cast on them by a huckster buffoon.
