We took their land and often forced them where they didn't want to go. We took away many tribal identities. But, we gave them reservations which are, in effect, their own nations within the USA boundaries. And, court rulings allow them to operate their own gambling establishments. (One things very seldom said is that, in addition to the horrible results of alcoholism, gambling is often just about as bad for them.)

Native Americans were here first, so moving them to reservations was the decent thing to do, at the time.

Possession is 10-10ths of the Law. They failed to band together to resist the European invasion. It is a foolish conqueror who allows his enemy to retain property and sovereignty. We did just that.

Working for a living is often times a double edged sword. And in so many professions, they're to numerous to count. Police work, fishing, and so on..

Possession is not quite at the level you suggest in regards to ownership, but at the time, you're probably right on the money.

As for our ability to join together and beat the crap out of all comers, that was something totally unexpected on the part of Native Americans, and by the time they figured that out, it was to late. They did manage to band together in later years, but like i already said, by then it was to little, too late
