RIP, Tom Clancy, died last week at age 66.

But I've read most of John Varley's books, and I love his imagination. One trilogy he wrote, Titan, Wizard, Demon, was about a female spaceship commander exploring uncharted space. She finds a planet in the shape of a wagon wheel, where the inhabitants live in the rim, and the god lives in the hub. The main creatures, the Titanides are half horse and half human, with both male and female horse genitals, and either male or female human genitals. She becomes the Wizard when she puts one of the Titanide eggs in her mouth and it becomes fertile, so the Titanides can have children. Then she becomes the Demon when she goes to the hub to see the god.

Varley's new book is very disturbing though. It's called SLOW APOCALYPSE. It's about a guy in California that finds out about a virus that has infected all the worlds oil. A very depressing book. I'm only a third of the way through it, and every page is more depressing than the one before it, because it's so possible.
