Violence is failure and violence of this magnitude is the ultimate failure. There is a lot of territory between not wanting to crush the dreams of a person who has severe character flaws and aiding and abetting an individual who expresses a desire to kill other human beings "lawfully".In short, it's a hot mess top to bottom. Sorry to be a downer, but there it is. As I have said before in so many ways, one fix for this would be an absolute zero-tolerance policy for violence in schools. But the culture doesn't have the stomach for it. The parents don't have the stomach for it.
So we will continue spewing out kids for whom their former teachers will say, "I knew this was coming."
If you punish both the perpetrator and the victim due ot a zero tolerance policy (such as the case when a student defends themsleves that engenders a sense of injustice and if justice or fairness cannot be found by going to the "adults" in charge then you're essentially teaching them that they're on their own and bringing attention to issues of this nature only results in backlash towards the victim.
Getting to the bottom of a situation takes time and effort and it's important especially when known problem children are allowed to tarnish the reputations of others whom for all intents and purposes did nothing to warrant being targeted.
Also, when I use the terms "you" or "you're" I don't mean you specifically.
