Am I right that the Sun has seasons just like Earth?
And right now it is beginning a season of high activity...seems like I heard that somewhere.
Doom and gloom is always an attention grabber, but I heard some expert science guy awhile back talk about this. That the last time the sun was in an active season, there were no satellites/computers etc.
He was saying that an active state in the Sun is 100% guaranteed to happen and that it was time for it now. And when it does, now that we are all so dependent on the internet for so many things - it will be catastrophic.
I can say, our business is out of business 100% without the internet. Done.

It's pointed at us right, by golly.

The region's unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for strong explosions, prompting NOAA forecasters to boost the daily odds of M-flares to 45%, and X-flares to 10%.

No, it won't destroy western civilization. Yes, it can do a lot of damage. On a personal level, check the news often and be ready to shut off the main breaker to your house. There's a two-hour warning time between when the flare is sighted and when the charged particles hit earth. There's no need to shield things with tinfoil, as it's not an EMP. A flare kind of event only builds up voltages in very long cable runs.

As most Americans go about their daily lives without care or concern for what’s happening around them, 92 million miles away a catastrophic threat may well be in the making.

We can't see it with the naked eye so most of us don't even know it's happening. But, the article provides some neat pictures @ Prison Planet.com » This Is a Monster: Sunspot Now Larger Than Jupiter? Continues to Unleash Solar Flares

Photogs get snaps of the truly massive sunspots all the time. And one being as big as Jupiter, on the Sun, is still an itty bitty thing.

Flares are no concern unless you're a satellite. Even CMEs that hit the planet only make Auroas which are pretty, but ultimately of no concern.

Lots of people here watch the science sites (of which prisonplanet aint one btw heh) if anything happens on the Sun or otherwise occurs that can actually kill people, we'll let ya know :)

Sure, the Sun is really big and all, but what's that compared to the 2PPM of CO2 that was added to the atmosphere these last 5 years?

Sunspot AR1974 has spit out some M-class flares, but that's only of concern to astronauts and satellites. It doesn't affect us earthbound types. Still bears watching, though.

Solar activity is at high levels as five M-class solar flares and multiple CMEs were observed over the past 24 hours. The primary source is active sunspot AR1974, which has a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong explosions. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of M-flares and a 10% chance of X-flares on Feb. 13th.

I wish you were correct, but you are not. A very strong flare, a Carrington Event, could shut our civilization down for a few days.

Here are today's sunspots:

As a group, the ones on the right are approximately the size of Jupiter, but no individual sunspot is that size.
