Too true.
To add to what you said, there are various stores whose company policy is to throw away unsold food at the end of the day, no exceptions.
 
The stores here donate a lot of it too. Not all of it..not Fred Meyer's for example.

People who can and preserve often contact the stores and get permission to come in and highgrade their throwaways.

Our food pantry has a panel truck that goes around to all the grocers and picks up their seconds and stuff they're tossing.

Same here. They pick up unwanted produce. Dented cans and anything getting ready to expire that they can use that day or by the expiration date.
