TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Nobody is tired of winning here. Like so many other places that voted for Trump they are struggling just as much or more than before the election of 2016. Promises of returning manufacturing jobs, infrastructure jobs, and better health care have not materialized, and it's residents have all but given up hope

Its economy is struggling. City finances are a mess. Markers of misery — lower family income, higher rates of smoking and obesity, surging opioid use — are many. Its 108,000 residents are much whiter than the nation as a whole, and its demographics are changing only to the degree that the population is skewing older and less educated. It has benefited from government programs, like disability payments and a stimulus grant under the Obama administration that delivered a flood control project, but people here rail against Washington anyway.

If President Trump cannot deliver on some of his promises soon, with a GOP controlled Congress, a young Liberal Junior Senator from a blue state may very well become the next President, and sweep in with him (or her) a Democratic Congress just like one did in 2008.

Time is running out Trump supporters.....

The New York Times? Come on.

They'd dig up truculant liberal in Terre Haute if it took them a month of interviews to find them.

Stop wasting my time Bill...if I want leftwing propaganda, I can turn on the Mainstream Media for that.

th

Perhaps if the city council didn't spend money like it grew on trees so they have to raise taxes and/or the appraisal value on property people would be better off.

China, Mexico, Canada, in that order. If Trump doesn't deal with China before 2020, the Democrats will promise to do so and Trumps big promise will be broken and his presidency not likely to be renewed.

Trump doesn't need to deal with these countries at all.

Capitalism is considered the best system because it forces people to IMPROVE or die.

Now the capitalists are saying that they don't like to try and improve, instead they like promote laziness.

Capitalism vs state run economics? You have no choice but to defend against abuses from these systems, laziness has nothing to do with 70000 factories headed to China, try devaluation of the Yuan among many other issues.

Place tariffs down to protect against abuses. Improve global competition and innovation, not a race to the bottom. If you don't demand free market capitalism, you have to at the very least defend against foreign abuses.

Nine freaking months and the crazy left is whining that the two trillion increase in the DOW hasn't reflected on Terre Haute yet? How did Hussein's eight freaking years work out.?

Made up bull shit.

Saved America from the Bush crash? That worked out OK, yet Trump is doing nothing to help an economy that is picking up steam but with inflated values. Trump and the GOP Congress better do something.

The issue here is that the US should not be fighting with China for shit jobs. The US should be rising way above those jobs and taking the jobs that earn decent wages for all. However the US is looking for the jobs that earn one man loads of money and everyone else little money.

Other countries, like Germany, are competing for the high tech jobs. The US has the potential to improve education to make the workforce much better, but doesn't.

It would be fair to wait and see if GOP's Tax Reform will bring industry back to the U.S.

That is little more than a pipe dream. Corporate income tax cuts have never resulted in increased investment. They always result in increased wealth inequality. Companies are not sitting on piles of cash because the tax rate is too high. They are sitting on piles of cash because they don't see any investment opportunities meeting their risk analysis criteria. And a tax cut increases risk, it does not decrease it. It is a fool's folly.

And a corporate tax cut will not encourage companies to repatriate their foreign held profits. How much do corporations pay on their foreign held profits today? ZERO. How much do they pay under Trump's tax proposal? ZERO. So why would they bring them back and pay even a twenty percent tax when they can STILL PAY ZERO? Another fool's folly.

And the most comical claim, that the corporate tax cut will encourage additional jobs and wage increases. If a company wants to raise an employee's salary or even create another job under current tax law, well it costs them sixty five cents on the dollar. When the corporate tax rate is cut that increases their COST to eighty cents on the dollar. How does increasing the COST of wage increases and additional employees result in higher wages and additional hiring? A third fool's folly.

I won't argue with you there, but it still begs the question about state abuses and exploitation. One thing I agreed with Obama is that it is not right for a company to enjoy the protection of the United States, to develop the ingenuity and innovation within the United States, with the best environment, tax breaks, incentives to develop a successful product, only to reach maturation and decide it's time to move our jobs overseas while sending the product into the U.S.

Ironically, if Obama had taken a strong stance against abuses from China and demanded a more "American First" attitude, it may have rubbed off on the Democrats and they could have found a centralist to win. Instead, as always happens with socialist/"progressives", they plot ways to control and intervene in the economy, whether it be regulations, or climate control, hand outs to businesses to lose money etc.

So, I used to be a committed believer in globalization, but I cannot doubt the harmful effects it has had on so many who are fighting entire nations for their jobs. I have never been a fan of unions, don't particularly like protectionism, but as I know what Canada does within these companies and how they prop up poor Canadian companies to compete, I know full well that Canada should not have near the level of employment they do. This is not free market capitalism, far from it. This only happens because of massive state intervention and meddling. In some cases, persecution...

Yes, there are issues with state intervention in companies, and I don't have a problem with companies being given a fair fight against companies from places which get state intervention. The problem is though that the issues that should be issues, aren't being played out. The whole thing is a "save American jobs" because it's easy to understand and CHEAP for the rich people. Education they don't want to get involved in, so they make sure this isn't an issue.

This has more to do with how the US govt works (or doesn't work) than anything else for me.

Terre Haute seems to be doing okay. Their debt is down to $8 million and they are making progress with that and have managed to keep their golf courses open.

As for unemployment, fair July 4.1%. Maybe they should shut down one of the golf courses. Two city courses seem a lot for a city with only a 60,000 population. We have far more than that attend an FSU football game on a Saturday night.

Then they have that FBI investigation hanging over their head for corruption. Not something President Trump really has a lot to do with does he?

Then there is the Ind. income tax of 4.55% and 7% sales tax.

Wow. You people truly are brain dead aren't you? It will take more than a few months to reverse the damage that 30 years of progressive rule have wrought on the middle of the country. Get real.

You guys think you can make shit up like this and separate Trump supporters from Trump. The problem is we all know how you people lie all the time. There isn't anyone who voted for Trump that is unhappy right now. Certainly, there isn't anyone how voted for Trump and will say that they should have voted for Hillary. There are those of us who are unhappy with the things he hasn't done, things like punish sanctuary cities, but that doesn't mean we are going to vote democrat next election.

You morons are fooling yourselves.

We are seeing far right cons and libertarians above making up crap.

Let's see where we are in 2020.
