There is NO RISK in privatizing SS and investing in stock market!!!

. No one had sex,

100% too stupid!! Adults knew they had sex, obviously, but kids did not need to see it, it was private and sacred and for adults. Now everyone has sex and no one has love or family!! But, an total idiot liberal like you would say this is better and progressive!!

One cant imagine the depts of liberal animalistic ignorance!! It really seems less than human it is so ignorant and depraved.

Those old TV shows were nothing like life in the 1950's. They were sanitized version of what we wished life was like. The 50's were not a ‘magical’ time – most times in our past were not.

too stupid as always!! Nobody said they represented what life was like in the 1950's, just what we should all aspire to. When my chemistry teacher passed a bad check he was instantly fired as a very bad example and role model. Today you can buy "Breaking Bad" dolls at "Toy' R US".

Is a liberal too stupid to know which is best?
The images of the 50's on TV, movies, books, advertisements was that of an idealized America. No one had sex, they just kiss and had babies. No one cursed. No one told smutty jokes. All normal women married, had 3 wonderful children, lived in a pretty little house, and the biggest problem the family ever faced was picking out Sis's prom dress. Crime never paid. Blacks all loved fried chicken and watermelon. No one was homosexual. The problem with this sanitized version of America is it made everyone an outside. The 60's was a violent reaction to the phony America of 50's.

I think that's a retrospective view. I highly doubt the people in the 1950s, all thought that TV was how life really was.

Exactly, but everyone knew they would like to be loved the way Donna Reed and Alex Reed( was that his name? ) were loved. Without a role model kids and adults have no idea how to proceed.

We have to admire the genius of a culture that produced such art and be sickened at the hip hop culture that replaced it with depravity. To a liberal depravity is progressive.

too stupid! If they felt like outsiders they would not have watched the shows. Too stupid, it would be like saying that watching professional sports makes everyone feel like an outsider or non athlete!

America was a great country then because we all aspired to an ideal anda tried to reach it. Now blacks, and to a lessor extend whites, are taught that love, family, and success is white.
There were no shows that about black, Latino, or single parent families. No black or women news newscasters. The message sent by the media was that a women's place was in the home, happily married with kids. And it you didn't fit that mold, then there was something wrong with you. Sex education, infertility, mental illness, homosexuality, spousal abuse, substance abuse child abuse, and most of the serious problems people faced were just not part of this idealized American. No wonder so many people would like to be transported by this fantasy world.

Yeah, and things are sooo much better now. If you think today is an improvement over the 1950s, I think you are nutz.

of course human beings need ideals and direction. Accepting hip hop culture is accepting and thus encouraging the status quo. Now you can understand how liberal culture imprisioned most young black men. Dear, prison is not a positive. Can you understand that?

a liberal can no more admit the depravity he has unleashed upon our society than HItler Stalin and Mao could admit what they did to their societies.

The real America of the 50's, not the TV version was one that few people today would want to return. In the 50's, thousands of kids each each year died of polio and tens of thousands were crippled. A cancer diagnosis was a death sentence for most people. Highway death rates were three times what they are today because of the lack of safety equipment in cars. Homosexuals were beaten and murdered by the police and considered mentally ill by doctors. Domestic violence and child abuse was a dirty little secret in families. Women lived in loveless marriage because they had no other option. In most states men had the right to have sex with their wives with or without their consent and discipline them as needed. In many states birth control in any form was illegal. Most professional jobs were closed to women and they made half what a man made. Jim Crow laws prevented blacks from voting in the many places in the South. Segregation laws in a third of the states made second class citizens out of blacks. A number of institutions and businesses limited or totally excluded Jews. At 18, you were old enough to die for your country but not old enough to vote. Full sized cars got about 10 miles to gallon and would be considered deathtraps by today's standards. Of course everyone went to church in the fantasy America but in the real America, attendance at protestant churches was only 23% and attendance in catholic churches fell throughout the decade.

Ozzie's and Harriet's idealized America was in reality a wasteland of ticky-tack houses, bored men commuting to work, unhappy housewives popping tranquilizers, and greedy, demanding children. Citizens had become consumers, purchasing goods in an endless attempt to keep up with their neighbors.

You switched from how social norms were portrayed on TV, to material and technology advances.

I don't see the two as being directly connected.

Could we have cured polio, without ending up with a Jerry Springer society? I think so.

And I would say more women live in loveless marriages today than ever in the past. Almost 30% of couples report having sex once a year, if at all. Top causes.... Adultery, Porn, unrealistic expectations. Basically all the things modern media has given us.

Domestic violence is far worse today, than it ever was in the 1950s. If you go back farther, someone who beat their wife was publicly humiliated. The District of Columbia actually put up a whipping post for wife beaters in 1909.

The technological advancement of cars, would have happened no matter what the social norms were. Moreover, your claims about 10 miles per gallon is just garbage, showing total ignorance.

Olds 88, from 1950, 24 MPG according to the owners, and according to staff at GM.

You people just make up crap you know nothing about. I worked at a Cadillac dealership, which had the original marketing material for Caddies back in the 1960s. Even then they were posting 20 miles per gallon in the old caddies.

Listen sparky.... you want to debate stuff fine. But if your going to say something about the past, you had better make darn sure you are telling the truth. You spew crap like "1950 all cars got 10 mile per gallon" when anyone who knows anything about history knows that's not even close to true, you just ruin your own credibility.

Now everything you say, that I don't have direct knowledge of, I'm going to wonder if you are just spewing more made up crap. After all, you just now proved yourself a total BS lying sack of crap.

You're correct about the gas mileage. I misread something that said gas mileage was 10 mpg better in the 50's than today.

I listed other than social items because to compare the quality of life in two time periods you have to compare life experiences that covers a broad range items. You can't say life was great in the 50's because moral values were higher and ignore social inequities. You have to look at the whole ball of wax.

I lived through the fifties and there is much I love about the period but there is no way I would want to go back. I loved the simplicity of life then but I hated the narrow minded approach to life that prevailed in those years.

Well I was looking at it specifically through the reference of the social aspects the TV shows portrayed, which you are the one who cited.

Based on your citation, I responded.

Technological advancement is indisputably better. Standard of living is of course much higher today, than in the past. I never suggested otherwise.

The social aspect of our society, and cultural aspect, have been absolutely ruined in our modern time. The social and cultural aspects depicted on TV sets, was how life really was. People had respect for each other. Crime was low. Families stayed together. Adultery was far rarer, and civility far more common.

Now we have TV shows that reflect the worst in society, and society has become much worse. The kind of first hand accounts I've witnessed in my short life time, is revolting. Jerry Spring has become the norm, instead of the exception.

Yes, advances in medical care, have made life better. Distribution of utilities, and transportation, and our Capitalist wealth in general has improved for all areas of society.

But our 'social' progress, is more of a regress. Things happen today, that would never have happened 100 years ago. Our prisons are full of the results of Social Progress. AIDs alone is nothing more than exactly what our social progress has resulted in. People wasting their lives away on pot, leaving bastard children in a path of devastated ex-girlfriends, and ex-spouses, living out their lives on welfare, and spending more energy on how to game the system, than how to make a living.

Quite frankly, one might wonder if having a more happy, friendly, and civil society, might be worth a trade of the technological advances that allow people to spam insults and harassment until a 14-year-old girl commits suicide. Where people in San Fransisco yell from their cars to a woman to stop waiting and jump from a bridge, because she's holding up traffic, and radio coverage taunted the woman on air, with splashing sound effects. Where a boy kills himself live on his web cam, with people logging into the feed to egg him on, typing "DO IT! DO IT!".........

This is your progressive ideology played out. Life has no meaning. We have no purpose. And we have no reason to not treat others in as hideous a way as we want, so long as it gives us pleasure.

I could tell you the stories of people I have known personally, but it would make you sick. The above, is tame honestly.

Bush's plan was to offer the option of investing a small portion of confiscated FICA taxes in the Stock Market. It would have done a couple of things. First of all there is no Social Security "locked box". Politicians have been stealing from it since SS was passed and the biggest crook of all LBJ made it official. Black males who pay into SS all their lives have a greater incidence of dying before they are able to collect benefits. Bush offered Black men a chance to take a small portion of SS and put it in their will if they died. Democrats went crazy. All the money was supposed to belong the government. Amazingly democrats convinced their low information African American base that Bush's plan was bad for them and they swallowed it like the pablum they were spoon fed by democrats for a hundred years.

Everyone who claims that LBJ did something to Social Security....

First off, obviously I am the opposite of a pro-re-gressive, and I have no love of LBJ. So this is not an attempt to defend that moron.

But, all LBJ did was try and have a unified budget, that accurately portrayed how things really are. He did not do anything to change how Social Security functioned. It has functioned the same way since it was created.

If Social Security is off budget, or on budget, doesn't matter. It still collects taxes, pays benefits, and either the surplus ends up as general revenue, or the deficit is taken from general revenue.

The difference LBJ made, was putting the numbers on the budget sheet, instead of keeping them off budget. All Federal Funds operate this way.

Say I'm governor of a small Island.
I collect $500 in taxes each year, and $100 in 'pension taxes' each year. I pay out $50 in pension benefits, and spend $550.

The people scream! That $50 was supposed to stay in my pension fund!!

Oh...... ok..... my bad. No problem.

So I'm government, and I collect $500 in taxes, and $100 in 'pension taxes', and pay out the benefits of $50.

With the remaining $50, I setup a fund. I have the fund purchase bonds, which I as government decide to sell those bonds. The fund purchases $50 worth of bonds. The fund then collects the IOU note. And I as governor collect the $50.

I then spend the $550 that I now have.

Now what changed between the two situations? On a purely practical level.... nothing. In both situations, the 'pension fund', collected $100 in taxes, paid out $50 in benefits, and $50 went to the government and was spend with the general revenue.

The only differences was purely the paperwork, and the illusion that the "trust fund" had assets. But since I run the Trust Fund, and I run the government, those bonds are nothing more than ME saying that *I* will pay back the money *I* spent.

When you promise you, that you will pay you back.... that's a fraud. That's what the Social Security Trust Fund is, and always has been.

LBJ only wanted to place the Fraud on the budget, so everyone could see what it really was. A tax, and an expense. Nothing more. He changed nothing in how Social Security operated. It still collected taxes, still paid benefits, and still used the surplus to buy bonds, and the money was sent into the General revenue and spent.

You can't separate major social changes from technological changes. For example, in the 1950's most women were discouraged from seeking a career. Only 33% entered the work place and most of them were seeking only to supplement family income. Girls got married out of high school or went off to college to seek a husband. Most girls that wanted to go into scientific fields were discourage by their peers, parents, and even professors. Many a girl who had the makings a fine scientist, engineer or lawyer yielded to social pressures and settled for a job of homemaker. Not that there was anything wrong with being a homemaker if that is what your really wanted but it was huge waste on a national scale to have talent women who wanted a career, washing baby bottles and scrubbing floors.

Much the same can be said of talented young blacks taught by parents and peers that their place was in the mine, the cotton field, textile factory.

In spite the promises American made to our disable veterans and others with disabilities, in the 40's and 50's, they had little to choose from in the workplace. Most jobs for the disable were low playing jobs with little future. Office buildings and work sites with stairs offered no entry for people with disabilities who sought employment, and employer attitudes created even worse barriers. Otherwise talented and eligible people with disabilities were locked out of opportunities for meaningful work. Again, it was terrible waste of talent because their just wasn't a place for the disabled in the workforce in the 50's.

Women, blacks, and disabled had a well defined role to play in the 50's. However, that role was often confining and rob so many people of opportunities.

People today are less constrained by social mores. They feel freer to pursue the goals they choose without social condemnation. Sometimes those goals lead to crime, economic disaster, broken homes, and other social problems. However, often pursuing those goals lead to rewarding careers, economic success, and a more fulfilling life.

dear, if going to the factory to raise widgets is more rewarding than staying home to raise human beings we have a depraved country. We went from Donna Reed culture to hip hop culture overnight. Who but a liberal would say that is progress.

sometimes?? the liberal near genocidal goals were targeted at blacks in particular and 75% of the time they led to povery, broken homes, and/or prison!! Liberals Hitler Stalin and Mao cant face their ignorance and depravity and would keep killing rather than admit what they really are.
