Despite the fanfare surrounding wind and solar, the world’s dependency on fossil fuels is increasing. Last week, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said that the world is now “transitioning to coal.”

Saad al-Kaabi, Energy Minister of Qatar, says, “Many countries particularly in Europe which had been strong advocates of green energy and carbon-free future have made a sudden and sharp U-turn. Today, coal burning is once again on the rise reaching its highest levels since 2014.”

They are right. Global coal demand will reach an historic high in 2022, similar to 2013’s record levels. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), “Global coal consumption is forecast to rise by 0.7 percent in 2022 to 8 billion tons…. Coal consumption in the European Union is expected to rise by seven percent in 2022 on top of last year’s 14 percent jump.”
Coal will continue to be a sought-after energy source as “rising gas prices after 2030 will make existing coal-fired generation more economic,” the IEA says. Global energy demand will grow by 47 percent from now through 2050, and oil is expected to be the major source of energy.

Analysts are projecting “a huge gas-to-coal fuel transition in power and industrial sectors” of Europe. Yes, not gas to renewables, but gas to coal.


In fact, the European Union’s coal consumption grew 16 percent year-on-year for the first half of 2022. European countries imported 7.9 million tons of thermal coal in June, more than doubling year-on-year. Annual coal imports are expected to reach 100 million tons by the end of the year, the highest since 2017.

much of that demand for coal is by the renewables heavy industry, they burn millions of tons of coal to make renewables

There's this whole "bait and switch" thing going on with "green energy".

Nobody wants to discuss how many watts are expended to raise sugar and corn which then needs more watts to turn them into ethanol.

They talk about gallons and carbon footprints and not energy units. Deliberately mismatching the numbers so you can't understand the problem.

EVs are the largest negative yet.

People were conned for years by magnet motors using rare earth magnets. But the fixed magnets do lose their magnetic properties when in opposing magnetic fields after a while. (3days)

Coal burning is troublesome though. The scrubbers needed to remove the mercury and other toxins are expensive...and we need to use these scrubbers or the results are catastrophic. We are at a tipping point in the world for how much the world can withstand of these toxins on the surface of the ground instead of buried deep within it.

When you can't eat the fish in lakes and rivers....it's a problem.

All true as you say.

People in general never think of the heavy industry thst produces renewables. People never even think about how you create the heat to turn iron ore into steel or how to melt silica turning it into silicon for solar panels.

It takes coal, technically very pure coal which is coke. Without a doubt when we create renewables such as solar and wind, we are using more coal.

It would be interesting to see the process used to make the magnets.

Take any material, 1 ton of iron uses 770 lbs of coke.

Silicon uses 1 ton of coke per ton of silica.

Copper? Etc..
One ton of coke is equal to roughly 24.8 million BTUs.

24.8 mmBTU = 7.27 million watt hours.
