Sometimes photographs deceive. Take this one, for example. It represents John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s rebellious gesture the day they won medals for the 200 meters at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, and it certainly deceived me for a long time.

I always saw the photo as a powerful image of two barefoot black men, with their heads bowed, their black-gloved fists in the air while the US National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” played. It was a strong symbolic gesture – taking a stand for African American civil rights in a year of tragedies that included the death of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy.

It’s a historic photo of two men of color. For this reason I never really paid attention to the other man, white, like me, motionless on the second step of the medal podium. I considered him a random presence, an extra in Carlos and Smith’s moment, or a kind of intruder.

"a kind of intruder."

WTF ? The man won the silver medal, that's why he was up there with the other two in the first place.

What a dumbfuck.

He was also demonized in his home country for doing that. His country never apologized to him for how despicably they treated him after his courageous act.

Anyways, decades later John Carlos and Tommie Smith were coffin bearers at that brave man's funueral. May God bless his soul.

The Australian government did apologize, but it took 8 years after he died.

We had a gay documentry about it, making out how nice and embarrassed we all are about winning.

Like as if that guy wasn't bullied to hell by those three guys for beating one of them.

"Bullied"?

What are you talking about, exactly? Your comments don't make sense.

I apologize for interrupting this therapy session, but what, EXACTLY, were they protesting? The 1964 Civil Rights Act had already been enacted, and LBJ's Great Society (welfare) programs were underway. What was left? Affirmative Action and minority representation voting districts? How has all of that worked out? What's going to be the next Olympic protest, vegetarianism and animal rights?

The dude on the right is raising the wrong hand.
Monkeys like you have no understanding of symmetry.

You need to accept the fact that your supposed historic picture, displays an ignorant person who doesn't even understand the cause he was supporting. Pretty typical for your people.

You need to accept the fact that the reason he is raising the left hand is because the white guy gave him his Black glove so he could form an arch representing Black power and unity.. Monkeys such as yourself always expose your ignorance. Pretty typical of you monkeys.

BBC ON THIS DAY | 17 | 1968: Black athletes make silent protest

"Smith said he had raised his right fist to represent black power in America, while Carlos raised his left fist to represent black unity. Together they formed an arch of unity and power."

" It was the Australian, Peter Norman, who suggested Carlos wear Smith's left-handed glove. For this reason, Carlos raised his left hand as opposed to his right, differing from the traditional Black Power salute."

Hey, look at that. You explained it perfectly and thereby officially won an argument. Nice work, Cave Monkey.

Hey look at that. You learned something. I thought you cave monkeys were dumber than a box of rocks but you are a little smarter than a rock.
