What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961.
Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1954.
Cincinnati, OH (3rd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1984.
Cleveland, OH (4th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1989.
Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor.
St. Louis, MO (6th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1949.
El Paso, TX (7th) has never had a Republican mayor.
Milwaukee, WI (8th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1908.
Philadelphia, PA (9th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1952.
Newark, NJ (10th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1907.

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.'---:cuckoo:

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats, yet they are still poor.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves." --Abraham Lincoln
So, elect a Republican mayor and everyone's on Easy Street, eh? That's the simple conclusion you seem to have drawn.

But take a closer look. Detroit, Buffalo, Cleveland, Milwaukee. All "North Coast" cities with diminishing industrial opportunities. Globalization and "free" trade ruined these cities along with Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Newark and St. Louis.

El Paso and Miami? Immigration.

Simple minds crave simple solutions. As if electing a Republican mayor would solve everyone's problems!

Actually, I believe the point expressed with these stats ius that we can say one thing for sure......Democratic policies, no matter what waqs promised on the trail, do not help the poor rise out of being poor.

Does not mean repoublican policies would....but...we KNOW that democratic policies dont.

So is your solution to simply "let them stay poor"?

That's falsely linking correlation with causation. Many people have brought up reasons why those cities are the poor, which policies can't do much if there isn't an industry in the area of jobs. It doesn't account to people who may have been rich but then got poor, nor does it account for the fact that poor people maybe had gotten themselves out of poverty. Overall the results would show that these cities are and continue to be poor, but not on an individual case.

Yea yea Iowa Guy, try looking up the ten poorest states in the country, they brillaint red for the most part all with repuke govenors

Another thread to bash Democrats instead of discussing meaningful solutions to this problem? Never mind. I had forgotten for a moment this was USMB.

The meaningful solution:

Reject democratic economic policy.

Right along with everything the Republicans have been doing.

And try listening to we Austrians for a change.

Stupid Keynesians.

States of the United States of America by income - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And here they are!

40 South Carolina
41 Louisiana
42 Montana
43 Tennessee
44 New Mexico
45 Oklahoma
46 Alabama
47 Kentucky
48 Arkansas
49 West Virginia
50 Mississippi

And, a handy color coded map to see which states have governors of which party:

Looks as if Montana, Tennessee, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas and West Virginia have Democrat governors.

nice dodge Iowa, by you logic even the poorest of the in our cities would be better off than 90% of the people in the world

BTW NOSMO , the last election cycle played hell in a lot of gov races, a lot of red states turned purple and they tossed their Repuke gov out like dirty bath water

Turns out though if you look at the richest cities by income in the United States, they're almost evenly split when it comes to democratic and republican mayors:

No. 1: San Jose, Calif. (Democratic)
No. 2: Anchorage, Alaska (Republican)
No. 3: San Francisco, Calif. (Democratic)
No. 4: Virginia Beach, Va.(Republican)
No. 5: San Diego, Calif. (Republican)
No. 6: Anaheim, Calif. (Republican)
No. 7: Raleigh, N.C. (Democratic)
No. 8: Seattle, Wash. (Democratic)
No. 9: Washington, D.C. (Democratic)
No. 10: Honolulu, Hawaii (Democratic)

Richest Cities In The U.S. - Forbes.com

Six democratic mayors and four republican mayors. So from what I'm gathering, there are some democratic governors doing a pretty good job and there are republican governors doing a pretty good job. Go figure. Partisan idiots.

A poor person in this Country living below the poverty line of $15,000 receives food stamps, housing, health care , Unearned Income Credit and other benefits that amounts to $43,000 per year. The average income of an American worker (not in Federal government jobs) is $40,000.

Don't cry to me about America's "poor".

It seems like minorities are especially hurting.

Population statistics by race:

1. Detroit: White 12%, African American 82%, Other/Mixed 5%
2. Buffalo, NY: White 54%, African American 37%, Other/Mixed 7%
3. Cincinnati, OH: White 53%, African American 43%, Other/Mixed 2%
4. Cleveland, OH: White 41%, African American 51%, Other/Mixed 7%
5. Miami, FL: White 67%, African American 22%, Other/Mixed 10%
6. St. Louis, MO: White 44%, African American 51%, Other/Mixed 3%
7. El Paso, TX: White 73%, African American 3%, Other/Mixed 22%
8. Milwaukee, WI: White 50%, African American 37%, Other/Mixed 9%
9. Philadelphia, PA: White 45%, African American 43%, Other/Mixed 8%
10. Newark, NJ: White 27%, African American 53%, Other/Mixed 19%

I'm sure Obama is on top of this problem.
Its more complicated I think.

Many of those towns have no industry at all, and they elected progressives who promise perks & jobs which never materialize.

Actually, and interestingly, they are cities with unionized industry....at least Detroit, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Milwaukee are for sure......and I would not be surprised if most of the others are as well.

The City of St. Louis is also Unionized & The City of Philadelphia, PA & The City of St. Louis have city earnings taxs so the workforce left in droves.

and if you combine the first letters of these cities you get

DBCCMSEMPN

coinkidink?

It's an acronym. DBCCMSEMPN: Democrats, Being Closet Communists, Must See Earned Money Please Nobody

It's not an acronym.

An acronym must form a word.

DBCCMSEMPN is not a word.

Oh snap, you're right. It is not an acronym. But it's still true that Democrats, who are really closeted communists, hate seeing earned money pleasing the person who worked for it.
