"The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires a moral revolution as well"

"The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires a moral revolution as well."

So Obama said today at Hiroshima, Japan.

It was pretty obviously an accusation that the "moral revolution" hasn't happened yet. People say it wasn't an apology. Perhaps more of a petulant whine?

Liberals usually require human nature to change, in order for their plans to work. That's why their schemes almost never work.
This is one of the fundamental differences between liberals (in both parties) and conservatives.

Liberals try to invent systems that would work beautifully if only people would act in a certain way - a way they have never acted over the long term in history.

Conservatives develop social systems that will work with people acting the way they historically always have. This tends to infuriate liberals, who accuse the conservatives of getting in the way of the liberals' projected utopia.

The egghead scientists who worked so hard to develop the Bomb are portrayed as heroes because the Country that drops the Bomb writes the history books. Even during the crazy 60's with "ban the bomb" demonstrations all over he globe the egg heads managed to avoid criticism. Most offered lame explanations of why they would work on such an abomination went something like they didn't know what it would turn into. Some blamed the U.S. government for deceiving them but most were proud of what they did and you can't find a single article in a liberal media site that ever blamed the scientists for the weapon they developed. Why is that? Maybe the academic world has a strong lobby in the liberal media or maybe it's a political issue and the left leaning media doesn't want to implicate the alleged peaceful scientific community. Is it possible that the egg heads were anxious to try out their exciting new weapon on humans and they were convinced at the time by political idiots that the Japanese were sub-human? Later on it is alleged that the eggheads justified their creation by selling secrets to Russia allegedly in a lame effort to equalize the nuclear powers when they didn't trust the United States to be the sole nuclear power.

But he might have been right in one way - not the way he meant, of course.

National leaders who want to invade neighbors who did no harm, really ought to think, "No, that would be a bad thing, we can't do that."

But when they don't, maybe they should partake of a little bit of "moral revolution", and say instead, "Gee, if we invade that country, someone will start dropping atomic bombs on our cities, blast us back to the stone age, and utterly destroy us as a functioning country. That would be a bad thing, so maybe we shouldn't invade after all."

That's about as close as we're going to come to the "moral revolution" the dreamy-eyed wishful thinkers are going to come. And it's better than nothing.

Except if we achieve the total nuclear disarmament that some people keep wishing for, we'll lose even that little bit of "moral revolution".

So morality is dependent on mutually assured destruction.
