Socialism is a slippery slope which invariably leads to economic collapse (see: Greece). Large socialist economies like the USSR and China both abandoned the "Worker's Paradise" dream because eventually it dies an ugly and painful death. Fortunately both have vast resources which facilitated the transition from socialism to market economies.
There is an apt term for the transition (in a democracy) from a market economy to socialism:

Ineptocracy - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or even try are rewarded - in exchange for their votes - with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
