And what seems to evade your careful analysis of the situation (you did read the articles, not just the headlines, right?) is that they were obviously not trying to overthrow anything, due to the lack of weapons. It was a disorganized mob that was ticked off at stuff that rioted that day. If they were, as you say, trying to overthrow the government, who was going to be the next Secretary of State?

Of course, the NG might have showed up, but if the leadership was sympathetic to the resistance movement, not necessarily acted to stop it.

But, there are a whopping 2700 people in the DC guard.
VA guard is about 7000 people.
MD guard is about 6000 people.
And, If Trump were involved in the event, he could neutralize the NG by declaring an emergency, federalizing them, and ordering them to stand in place wherever they muster.
