The Obesity Pandemic

It's none of your business if someone else is fat, is it?

Honestly, I'm kind of sick of the "it's none of your business" crowd. Obesity should be a concern for everyone. We have permitted food companies to sell us absolute junk that is no good for us, telling us that it is healthy at the same time. We allow our kids to play video games while eating chips and drinking soda for five or more hours per day and never seeing to it that they get any real exercise. There are answers to these problems and we should be having discussions on how to make positive changes for everyone, because in the end, we are all paying for it through higher medical costs.
No one is forcing people to buy junk.

It's funny how I can walk into a supermarket and buy whatever I want.

You can too

So tell me who is putting the Twinkies in your cart?
The problem is most Americans have no idea what a healthy diet consists of. They have been told so many lies by the government, big food, and other corporate special interests, that they have no clue.

Most Americans are too lazy to research nutrition and learn the facts, even though the internet readily provides it for them. They want to believe that diet does not affect health...it is all about your genes, they are told and foolishly believe.

For example, Americans are told endlessly to eat whole grains to be healthy. That is total BS. Sugar is everywhere in our food and it is well known that sugar is toxic and as addictive as cocaine. So the food industry offers sugar substitutes, which are even more harmful.

Like so much in America, corruption and lies rule the day. A sick population generates lots of profits for the drug companies, physicians, and healthcare operations. The establishment's treatment of cancer is a perfect example.

Trying to eat a healthy diet is difficult, even when you know the facts. The powers that be have contaminated our food supply with all sorts of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, GMOs, etc...which enriches another special interest..chemical companies like Monsanto.

Our huge expensive federal government, which is suppose to protect the people, is doing the opposite.
Most Americans don't know that eating less junk and more lean meats, veg and fruits is good for them?

Sorry but I don't buy it.

Ask anyone if a salad is better for you than a bag of chips and see what answers you get.

Ask anyone if eating less and exercising more will help them lose weight and be healthier and see what answers you get.

And seriously are you telling me that if one eats a diet of solely organic vegetable and another etas the exact same diet but with some modified peppers etc that the latter will be fat and the former won't?

It is not difficult to lose weight and get healthier. it's just easier to sit on your ass and eat Ben and Jerry's
No doubt laziness plays a part. Misinformation does too.

Most Americans think eating grains is good. Most do not know suger is toxic. Most do not know about all the chemicals, GMOs, etc in our food.
So now GMOs make people fat?

Ask anyone if reducing sugar intake is good and see how many people already know it is.

People are not misinformed about obesity. They already know how not to be fat. They just choose not to do what they have to do.

Don't you think that's denying the obvious? Our ability to supply ourselves with high calorie diets has radically changed in the last century or so, and we need to find a way to adjust our eating habits to compensate.

You adjust your eating habits by choosing to eat other things. It's just as easy to eat a healthy diet as it is a crappy one. There are no different skills involved in eating a salad over eating a bag of chips.

If you are fat and choose not to change your diet then you are choosing to be fat. I don't care how much you might want to change other peoples' habits you can't.

Nah... I'm not going there at all. I'm just looking at what's going on. People are gaining a lot of weight because our access to high calorie foods is much greater than in used to be. For most of our history as a species, we've been programmed to eat as much as we can get when we can get it - to make up for the frequent lean times. But those lean times are few and far between now.

We have access to more of everything now you simply have to choose what you want. People who know how not to be fat and still are fat are choosing to be fat.

I admit that I don't get out much, but spending a weekend amongst the crowds at the Smithsonian and other tourist venues this past weekend has strongly reinforced my belief that we Americans are just toooooo fat.

Looking around me it seemed like almost everyone has this problem (I know that's an exaggeration, but...), and the older we get the worse it is.

As if to illustrate the point, I went to the hotel buffet breakfast on Sunday, and seated at a large table near me was what appeared to be several generations of the same family, ranging in age from 5-6 to 70. The obesity was almost linear. The little kids were thin, the highschool age kids were chunky, the adults (20-45) were significantly overweight, and the grandparents were morbidly obese.

This is worse than smoking. At least smokers can function (can't run but they can do everything else), but when you are fat you are shut off from a lot of the activities that, for me anyway, make life fun.

And ironically, we are obsessed with sex. I can't even imagine wanting to copulate with a woman who is built like Rosie O'Donnell. I'm sure the same is true of women looking at all the fat men. There must be a lot of sexually frustrated people out there. Thank God for internet porn and self-help.

I personally don't claim to be in wonderful physical condition, or to have any self-restraint for that matter. I have made a deal with my body: I eat like a pig and work out five days a week. With that deal, I'm not svelte, but presentable.

What could the Surgeon General do about the obesity pandemic?
I don't know what the surgeon general should do...but I've lost 50 lbs in 2014.

It really doesn't matter who is putting Twinkies in my cart. I'm in great shape. Unfortunately, there are tens of millions of fat asses out there who apparently are not capable of making good decisions about their own health. While we cannot force change on them, there are ways to make it easier for them to make better choices. I would think that you were smarter than that and had a better understanding of the fact that unhealthy people cost us all in higher medical costs and higher health insurance premiums. You have the typical attitude of an uninformed conservative.

Unfortunately just about everyone out there really misses the point. It's not so much about how much you eat as it is how little you exercise. Yes, with all of today's processed foods, it can be a challenge to some to eat a decent healthy diet. Most people are too lazy to cook a decent meal, even though it can be done relatively quick. But consumption would not be such an issue if people worked their bodies regularly. People are just lazy. They have jobs that keep them lazy, and then they go home and do nothing with their time away from work. I consume 3000 to 4000 calories every single day, and I do not gain weight, nor am I overweight. I weigh between 135 to 145 and that goes up and down depending upon how much I work out. And I do not spend an unrealistic amount of time working out. I spend approximately 45 to 60 minutes per day doing either cardio or weights. Some days I will do both, so the time jumps to about 90 minutes on those days, but I also completely take off at least one day per week, and that usually turns out to be two days because something always seems to come up.

Why should we spend money on people who choose to be fat?

As I said everyone already knows how not to be fat.

And why do you think I'm a conservative? You have absolutely no idea of my political bent.

Your problem is you think everyone else is stupid and needs your help because you are oh so much smarter than they and they need you to make the "right" decisions.

It's none of your business if people choose to be fat

It all comes down to economics, on the one hand, and seeking gratification on the other.

People produce food to make money, and for no other reason. Therefore, they make food that tastes good and is satisfying (filling), because people will respond to that. Twinkies taste GOOD!

Fast food is food that is easy to get, tasty, and filling. For 6 or 7 bucks you can eat something quickly that is delicious, and after eating it you have a pleasant feeling of fullness. The company producing the fast food doesn't care if the food is "healthy" or if it will make you fat. All they want is for you to have a gratifying experience so you will come back next time. Even when they sell you a "salad," it is so full of stuff and the dressing is loaded with sugar, so that the calorie intake is only a few points less than a Big Mac & Fries. But it tastes good and fills you up.

If they sold you fruits, lean meat, and nutritious vegetables, it would cost them more for the materials and in preparation, and you would not find it as gratifying. I mean, I like a good Jona-gold apple, but it is not as satisfying as a Whopper & fries, is it? Broccoli? That's like punishment.

And the same thing is true about how we live our lives. There are whole industries whose reason for existence is to get you to sit on your ass and be entertained without doing anything physical (or intellectual, in most cases). Television programs, video games, the internet, Kindles, smart-phone apps - they all lead to the same thing, physically speaking: they induce you to sit on your ass and be entertained.

The migration to the suburbs (thankfully, now reversing itself) is horrible for kids. They don't walk ANYWHERE! They ride a car or bus to school, a car to entertainment, a car to visit friends, a friend's car to the (fucking) MALL, and on and on. You can't do ANYTHING in the suburbs without getting into the car first, to transport yourself to the place where you do it. Even when the kids go out to "play" (play on an organized team...gag), they have to get Mom to take them to the park or field or gym, so that they can have an hour of organized activity.

Add it all up, and that's why so many of us are fat and "out of shape."

There is no easy solution. I think much of the progress in reducing smoking was the socialization process whereby it stopped being "cool" to smoke. In fact, in many circles smoking makes you something of an outcast. So as perverse as it may sound, I don't think it's wrong to idealize entertainers and athletes who have perfect physiques, even if it makes some people feel uncomfortable. I am personally nauseated when I hear some Pillsbury Doughboy-type person talk about how she is "comfortable with her appearance."

Maybe less comfortable would be better, eh?

Our food supply is purposely contaminated making many Americans fat and sick.
My weight and waistline are the same as when I was 21. But I took the time to research food and nutrition. Most Americans will not educate themselves.

If it were an actual "choice" -- no it wouldn't be.

It's none of your business if someone else is fat, is it?

By that logic it's none of your business if somebody notices an epidemic that reaches everybody, is it?
:talktothehand:
Except there is no pandemic or epidemic. A pandemic or epidemic is the result of a disease. If you get fat it is neither. It is because your fat ass eats too much.

It really doesn't matter who is putting Twinkies in my cart. I'm in great shape. Unfortunately, there are tens of millions of fat asses out there who apparently are not capable of making good decisions about their own health. While we cannot force change on them, there are ways to make it easier for them to make better choices. I would think that you were smarter than that and had a better understanding of the fact that unhealthy people cost us all in higher medical costs and higher health insurance premiums. You have the typical attitude of an uninformed conservative.

You may be right, but I am paying for it and so are you. Of course, maybe you are just being so defensive because you are overweight yourself?
Not at all.

I just know that another person's choices are absolutely none of my business nor are they yours.

And if you are paying for it as you say then you should be able to tell me exactly how much of your money fat people cost you.

It's none of your business if someone else is fat, is it?

If it were an actual "choice" -- no it wouldn't be.
So who is forcing people to be fat?

Of course it's a choice. No one is putting the Twinkies and ice cream in your grocery cart for you

Our food supply is purposely contaminated making many Americans fat and sick.
My weight and waistline are the same as when I was 21. But I took the time to research food and nutrition. Most Americans will not educate themselves.

It doesn't matter if you buy organic vegetables if you eat more fruits and vegetables instead of high calorie junk you will lose weight.
If you add exercise you will lose even more weight

Everyone already knows this.

I know the topic is obesity, but my posts are about health. You can be thin and unhealthy due to poor food choices.
