It's a rightwing lie repeated again and again. Over-regulation is the great job killer.

The way it's propagandized by the Right, one would think all we need to do is roll back some regulation and millions of jobs would magically appear. The miracle cure.

Well, of course it's a lie. When rightwing lips are moving, that is of course a good bet.

Here are the real numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

Table 2. Reason for layoff: Extended mass layoff events, separations, and initial claimants for unemployment insurance, private nonfarm sector, selected quarters, 2010 and 2011

Here's a nice readable, comprehensible picture that tells the story:

As you see, over the last 3 years, about 3/10ths of 1 percent of layoffs were attributed to government regulation.

To put that into perspective, that means for every 300 workers laid off in the last 3 years, 1 was laid off because of regulations.

On the other hand, about 100 times as many layoffs were caused by lack of demand.

duh.

Just something more to keep in mind when you hear Republican snake oil salesmen running for president tell you that they have a miracle cure for the employment situation, in the form of de-regulation.

Then get to debunking.

You are not there yet.

Tell the 200,000 unemployed people who could have had a job working on the Keystone Pipeline that regulation isn't a job killer.

Let's look a little more closely....The survey cited is Mass-Layoffs....Layoffs of 50+people in a month eligible for UI benefits. So firing 1 or 2 people from a small company won't show up. Plus, it's a long list of reasons and the response for "regulation" would only be given if regulations were the main reason, and not if regulations didn't allow other efficiencies that would have allowed more workers.

So to be accurate, we can only sy that when asked, very few (0.2%) of employers who laid off 50 or more employees in a month claimed government regulation as the primary reason for the lay-off.

No, "MASS layoffs" are not caused by regulation, but do regulations (and the cost of complying with them) cause business to not create job openings in the first place? Hell yes! But don't let logic and reason enter into your little childish rant.
