People from the USA call themselves Americans but these same people are are distinguished by other names in different languages. Canadians do call them as distinct from Canadians although both come from North America. In Spanish, they are called estadounidense but americanos is common informally. In French it's un Américain. In German, it's Amerikaner. So, Europeans tend to use American exclusively to people from the USA, except perhaps in Spain.
