In 2010 that wasn't surprising considering how many seats democrats held to begin with.

2014 was the lowest turnout election in decades and the Senate map was full of red states, and the Republicans didn't take a single blue state senate seat.

Actually the results from last November was entirely expected. In fact, had the Democrats won seats in the House, it would have been an anomaly.

Every two term President since WW II has lost control of congress to his political opposition. The mid terms were not history making, they were history repeating. A slender reed to hang onto when measuring political potency.
