The Day After (1983)

It's fictional ... you realize that, right?

I watched this last year just to relive the memories of youth. I was a young lad when this movie was on TV, I remember watching it with my family and at the time, considering how afraid everyone was of Russia and nuclear war, yeah it was a sobering moment.

When you can sense your parents were uncomfortable watching it, it has an effect on you. Back in 1983 there were far fewer channels and only a few prime ones, ABC, NBC and in Canada we got WUTV which is Fox in Buffalo. So when a movie was promoted as this one was as Made For TV, it was a big deal. Teachers and kids at school talked about the movie the next day.

Even president Reagan was moved by the movie, so it had an impact fair greater than it's quality or even it's accuracy. He apparently decided to try and make peace with the Russians after seeing it, and if I'm not mistaken it was shortly after the U.S almost had a real nuclear situation if not for Petrov in Russia doing he right thing and not retaliating to a false alarm from their satellite.

Scary time indeed. Especially when consider the world was at the mercy of a foreign nation that was quickly becoming technologically a laggard, but they possessed such massive atomic power.

This is a pretty good example of what Nuclear War is about for the aftermath. Except, it would be worse.

Did you know that with Nuclear Armed United States, that the rest of the World has played nice since then? Think about what happened in Europe and Asia before the Nuclear bomb was invented? Conventional wars were happening regularly because there wasn't a chance of total destruction so Germany attacked France, France attacked Spain, Italy attacked Morocco, etc. etc. etc. But then Mutual Assured Destruction was discussed, where if you attack another country then you also could be totally destroyed, thus keeping in check those countries that have something to lose. But with these Rogue Nations like N Korea and Iran who have nothing to lose, if and when they finally achieve the ability to make a Nuke that can be carried by an ICBM, they could be the ones that start the nuclear war. Shame the past spineless admins since Clinton was in, did nothing to stop the production of the Nukes or the missiles that carry them...

You don't get it. It was based on facts. Yes, it never happened. Hence you are around to post your response. Now to really scare you and shake up your reality. Had it happened, it would have been worse. TV can't show the real aftermath. Even a movie would have to tone the reality down to not make "Snuff" status. And you would not have this message board or Facebook. And what would really do you in is not getting your Internet Porn because the Internet would be many decades off from being created.

The funny thing is, I was in SAC in 1983. We were well aware of the possibilities. We practiced the Aftermath. And at that time, the only ones with Internet was the Military and a few chose Universities. You would just about be getting your phone. And I don't mean your Cell Phone. I mean you would just now be getting a corded phone. That is, if you lived through the decades of disease, famine and more. Or your Parents would fall under that. You may not even exist. Hey, I came up with one good reason that it should have happened. But I can think of millions of reasons that I glad it didn't.

It didn’t happen. It didn’t come close to happening. It’s not close to happening now.

If you want to wet the bed over something, at least pick something contemporary like explicit rap lyrics or violent video games to have the vapours over.

This reminds me of a cartoon I once saw. The entire field is nothing but smoking holes. And there stands one lone figure in combat gear. He says, "I won, I think".

There was some facts and some fiction.

The facts were that a nuclear arsenal existed. The fictional account is them actually being used. It didn't happen.

This movie had a lot to do with it NEVER happening. The Leaders watched it and tone down their rhetoric right after.

Based on facts that the bombs started falling on the United States? What a crock of shit. I was in the military and in Germany from 1979 to 1982, during that time, I was there for Rolling Thunder, which was when the USSR would invade Europe and I was one of the first lines of defense by getting our F-4 jets up in the air and then kiss our ass goodbye. Then the French and Spanish bases would put their jest up and kiss their asses goodbye. Then Great Britain would get theirs up and do the same. By the time Rolling Thunder got to the US the ratio of jet to jet would be 2 soviet jets to our 1, but that would be about equal as our technology made up for their quantity. I knew what I was getting into, I knew that Nuclear Options weren't even an option, because the people of the USSR even though they were slaves to liberalism, they still loved life. That is why it NEVER happened...

Viewing your tag, that may be the left circling it's wagon but the far right (yes, you) idea of the same would be "Circle the Women and Children and hide the wagons".

It's a dangerous world out there. I spent 8 years playing that game. And, trust me, it's ain't no game. Some of us played that game like your lives depended on it. Actually, all of us lives were at stake. And I don't fault any one US President for the mess we are in (as in the World). Pakistan and India sit on that nuclear fence each and every second. The US used to with the old Soviet Union. Now, the whole world is sitting on that fence over North Korea. Same tune, different actors.;

All that movie did was make money for Hollywood who sold advertising. It was entertainment. Sometimes entertainment is fightening, like showing people getting blown up.

It was an "alternate history" story. If you like that you can go read Harry Turtledove's two book series about the Japanese invading Hawaii after Pearl Harbor.

If I’m going to have nightmares about nuclear disasters ... at least make them entertaining.

Did your book mention that the US knew that if Germany had not attacked Russia that not only would Wake have fallen but Hawaii would also have fallen. It would have been taken back but the war would have gone on for years longer. Luft46 would have been Luft51. And there would be no Korea all in 1951. You don't even want to go there in this. The World would have been damaged where the only two countries NOT devistated outside of 3rd world would the US and Russia. The Maps would have drastically changed.

Yes, it's a Hollywood movie, but nuclear attacks and retaliation have almost happened, the threat itself enough, don't kid yourself. What will happen if a real crazy tyrant, dictator has a nuke, as in North Korea? Do you want to trust your life in the hands of a guy who just doesn't care? Yes, Russians loved their children too, as it aptly stated by former Soviet officials during the Cuban Missile Crises, but that doesn't mean a Madman does.

This was especially more probable in the past, with faulty detection systems and a far less open channel of dialogue between nations. Technology and global communication are leaps and bounds better now than in the past, but there was a time that there was little communication, and everyone relied on sources and detection.

No, the book was fiction. It had a Jap officer convincing the higher ups that if they didn't follow up with an invasion of Hawaii then the US would use it at a staging base to kick their ass later on.
