The Contract From America

Education - stop the screwy "magical creation" and create some interest in "real" science. Make "elitist" education affordable so people that have the ability to become "elites" can.
That really means - Make all the elementary education majors learn more math themselves.
I have frequently heard teachers telling kids "Don't worry about that, math is hard, I could never do it when I was in school either."

A balanced budget is a balanced budget. So yes, if they cut taxes AND that reduces revenues, then they reduce what they spend. It is as simple as that. No 2/3rds vote should be necessary to let the people keep more of what they own. It SHOULD require a 2/3rds vote, however, to take away more of what the people own.

The principle is that the government serves the people, not the other way around.

bollocks, we serve the govt. I am not sure what country you live in but I live in America.
That is the reality.

I'm glad you've apparently resigned yourself to that but I have a NEWSFLASH for you, at least some of us American Citizens haven't.

I hope you find contentment in your self-imposed servitude and may the farce be with you.

accepting reality is much more restful than jousting at windmills.

Personally I'd prefer to go out on my shield rather than down on my knees but as they say "to each is own" .......

This really sounds good, and probably in the heart of every conservative in America....maybe some liberals too.

I have to question the heart of the republicans at this point. A lot of those same republicans were part of the problem in the Bush administration when they were running up the debt.

I am counting on a new breed of conservatives running for the Senate and Congress this coming summer and fall. If there is, it could bode well for the first step with your thread.

As I said previously, that is CPAC's whole emphasis if I am reading the promo material correctly. It was CPAC that helped design and promote the Contract With America and it was so successful and beneficial that it put enough visionary reformers, both GOP and Democrat, into Congress that they wound up with a balanced budget and saved Bill Clinton's presidency. They are looking to pull off the same kind of miracle in 2010. I hope we can benefit from that lesson from history.

Unfortunately, one of the planks of the Contract With America was term limits, and even though they were narrowly defeated in getting that initiative passed, most exercised personal integrity and term limited themselves. They were replaced with too many of the old guard who went back to business as usual with too much big government, too much spending, and rising deficits.

I hope we learn from that lesson of history this time around too.

Have at it then. what do you actually do with your shiled? Post on political BB's?
Or do you actually do something?

I need no shield, I just face what is actually happening.

Hey if the Socialists and Neocons start complaining about this new Contract, you know it's a good thing for our nation. They have both just about destroyed our nation at this point. When they're not complaining is when you know you're in trouble. I like this Contract. It could help.

Yeah well most of it has been around for a long time and the republicans have just mostly talked and done little of it.
They had their chance during most of the Bush years.

I always felt that they took out a contract ON America.
At least that is what their actions said to me.
Talk is easy, but walking the walk....

So which of the initiatives listed do you think should be taken seriously? Which should be eliminated?

They did walk the walk and did everything they said they would do in the Contract With America. Which of those 10 initiatives do you think they shouldn't have done or were bad for America. What made it a "contract ON America' as you think it was?

Yes Bush and most Republicans have been Neocons/Socialists in recent years. Lets hope the Republicans start turning that around. This new Contract would be a great start.

CURB LOBBYIST POWER????????????

But, but, I thought the CONSERVATIVE Supreme court opened our political system to corporations making them US Citizens? Isn't that the exact opposite?

How are you going to balance the budget fighting two wars and rebuilding two countries? I would say three, but Republicans don't seem to care about this one so much.

You thought? Dang... these snow storms must have gone to hell.

This one is especially interesting...'Require each bill to identify the specific provision of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to do what the bill does.' This really could reign in spending and curb excessive Government over-reaching.

Unlikely. It's just going to inspire them to find more creative ways to do what they want. Read some Supreme Court decisions where the Court justifies abuses of the Commerce Clause. It's mindboggling.

Yes. The new 'moderate' (translate that 'too liberal') Republicans who replaced the Contract with America group did not follow through on the reforms. It went back to too much business as usual. Evenso, they were better than the current majority in Congress as they at least were not looking to raise taxes. And, until the housing bubble burst in 2008, the deficit was dropping like a stone.

But it does seem ripe for a new reform initiative. As Clinton was absolutely unable to get any of his pet projects accomplished with his Democrat controlled Congress the first two years, Obama has been unable to get any of his accomplished. In trying to do so, however, both have so alienated mainstream America that they put those majorities in jeopardy.

IF.....and that's a big IF.....we are successful in putting enough reformers back into Congress to complete a Contract With America, I just hope that this time they realize that good policy has to be continually defended and nurtured. They can't just do it once and then assume it can't go back to the way it was.

I agree that the problems have been around for several years...decades even. But Bush and the prior administrations are not in office now. Yet, it is the democrats that are going about like it's business as usual, and we can no longer afford it. When is it going to stop, next administration? Because it's not going to be with the man that cried "hope and change".

...

What 10 do you see as most important? Or how would you narrow down the list to 10 most important?

The Contract From America

Here, for the first time, are the 22 solutions to be voted on beginning tomorrow:

DEMAND A BALANCED BUDGET: Begin the Constitutional amendment process to require a balanced budget with a two-thirds majority needed for any tax hike.
I'd settle for paying down the debt, with proviso that no further spending without full funding.

STOP THE TAX HIKES:
Permanently repeal all tax hikes, including those to income, capital gains, and death taxes, currently scheduled to begin in 2011.

COMMIT TO REAL GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY: Every bill, in its final form, will be made public seven days before any vote can be taken and all government expenditures authorized by any bill will be easily accessible on the Internet before the money is spent. (Proposed by: Steve Kulik, Gonzales, Texas; and Steve Hollis, San Francisco, Calif.)

PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION: Require each bill to identify the specific provision of the Constitution that gives Congress the power to do what the bill does.

PASS REAL HEALTHCARE REFORM: Greatly improve affordability of health insurance by permitting all Americans access to all health insurance plans sold anywhere in the United States through the purchase of insurance across state lines and allow small businesses and associations to pool together across state lines to buy insurance.

ENACT FUNDAMENTAL TAX REFORM: Adopt a simple and fair single-rate tax system by scrapping the Internal Revenue code and replacing it with one that is no longer than 4,543 words—the length of the original Constitution.

END RUNAWAY GOVERNMENT SPENDING: Impose a statutory cap limiting the annual growth in total federal spending to the sum of inflation rate plus the percentage of population growth.

LET US SAVE: Allow all Americans to opt out of Social Security and Medicare and instead put those same payroll taxes in a personal account they own, control, and can leave to whomever they choose.

PROTECT INTERNET FREEDOM: No regulation or tax on the Internet.

GIVE PARENTS MORE CHOICES IN THE EDUCATION OF THEIR CHILDREN: Improve American education by reforming the broken federal role through eliminating ineffective and wasteful programs, giving parents more choices from pre-school to high school, and improving the affordability of higher education.I think this should be means tested. It would be wrong to give those already able to pay for choice a voucher. Yes, I know they pay taxes, so do the singles and those with no children. The public schools would have an even more difficult time if needed vouchers are issued, those kids with parents that are involved, but poor, will find better alternatives. Those neglected will be stuck. Guess which is more difficult to reach?

PASS AN 'ALL OF THE ABOVE' ENERGY POLICY: Authorize the exploration of proven energy reserves to reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources from unstable countries and reduce regulatory barriers to all other forms of energy creation, lowering prices and creating competition.

PROTECT FREEDOM OF THE PRESS: Prohibit the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from using funds to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine in any form, including requiring "localism" or "diversity" quotas.

RESTORE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY & CONSTITUTIONALLY LIMITED GOVERNMENT: Create a Blue Ribbon taskforce that engages in a complete audit of federal agencies and programs, assessing their Constitutionality, and identifying duplication, waste, ineffectiveness, and agencies and programs better left for the states.

PROTECT PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS: Block state and local governments that receive federal grants from exercising eminent domain over private property for the primary purpose of economic development or enhancement of tax revenues. I think this should be handled by the courts.

REJECT CAP & TRADE: Prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from implementing costly new regulations that would increase unemployment, raise consumer prices, and weaken the nation's global competitiveness with virtually no impact on global temperatures.

STOP THE PORK: Place a moratorium on all earmarks until the process is fully transparent, including requiring a 2/3 majority to pass any earmark.

NO CZAR REGULATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION All "lawmaking" regulations must be affirmatively approved by Congress and signed into law by the president, as the Constitution requires for all laws.

AUDIT THE FED: Begin an audit of the Federal Reserve System.

NO MORE BAILOUTS: The federal government should not bail out private companies and should immediately begin divesting itself of its stake in the private companies it owns from recent bailouts.

STOP CAREER POLITICIANS & CURB LOBBYIST POWER: Begin the Constitutional amendment process to require Congressional term limits. No person shall be elected to the Senate more than twice or to the House of Representatives more than four times.

SUNSET REGULATIONS: All regulations will be "sunset" after ten years unless renewed by Congressional vote.

LET US WATCH: Broadcast all non-security meetings and votes on C-SPAN and the Internet.

Considering the state we're currently in, I'm trying to be practical. BTW, I care alot about those 'Fairness Doctrine' attempts, but I think they can be dealt with even today. With a proposal like this, I think it imperative to keep as short and to the points as possible.

Yeah, I thought you said this was coming from the Tea Bagger?

and Curly .........

Yep all three Vapid Stooges present.

Anyways, looks pretty good Foxfyre, although it would be hard to sort out the "most important" 10 without more details on each point.

I would say the most important ONE is a balanced budget.

You know, if Republicans would just stop taking the Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, three things they hate and despise, and volunteer for those wars that "keep us safe", then for sure, we could balance the budget.

Notice, I didn't call anyone names.

Actually, I noticed you couldn't maintain topicality even on the first page of the thread.

.

I've chosen a few that I feel are redundent in shrinking the size of government.

In the tradition of the Contract with America that put a revolutionary group of conservative Republicans and Democrats into Congress and did very good things in 1994, tomorrow CPAC will vote to narrow down 22 to 10 proposals for reform in a new Contract from America. It combines the best of reform proposals out there with the Tea Party spirit for reform. It is a message to our elected leaders of what the people demand.

What 10 do you see as most important? Or how would you narrow down the list to 10 most important?

All of this can be distilled down to one statement.

Enforce the Constitution as the Founders envisioned it.

Enforce the Constitution as the Founders envisioned it.

Unfortunately we have a mainstream electorate who, while their hearts and minds are in the right place, too often have not studied the Constitution or the documents that undergird it and would not respond well to a 'just enforce the Constitution' concept. I think they want to know that those campaigning for office understand their anger, their frustration, their fears, and their hopes and wants. If those running cannot articulate that in words they understand, they have no way of knowing whether they are likely to be well represented or not.

Just look at how differently some on USMB interpret the Constitution than probably you and I do, for instance.
