The Book of Mormon

well they some stupid beliefs same as any other religion
llke christians believing in a a virgin birth
like moslins thinking when they die they will have virgins waiting for them
like jews thinking they are the chosen ones
they all are good subjects for satire and ridicule lets have more of it

Good post, the more we can mock religion out in the open, without hypersensitive people freaking out, the better it is for society.

I think de-sensitizing society is for the better, on all subjects.

Mormonism isn't any crazier than the more mainstream religions, it's just younger. When something has been crazy for 2000+ years, compared to another one only being crazy for 150+ years, humanity hasn't had enough time to become numb to it yet.

Being able to live inside a whale, your soul coming back in the form of giraffe or something, dozens of virgins waiting for you in Utopia etc, all these things become "uncrazy" with time.

Because, of course, being a dick about someone's beliefs is the best way to create a constructive dialogue.

There is a difference betweem criticism and parody, which are fine, and going out of your way to be a smarmy psuedo-intellctual jackass, which seems to be the method of choice for you more outspoken atheist types.

That's fair, but often times I'm labeled a "smarmy pseudo-intellectual jackass" by the bible-thumping types for simply pointing out certain passages. The ones that talk about living inside a whale, or how rape victims should marry the rapist, etc. I'm just the messenger, be angry with the person who wrote that jibberish, not me.

I more like the idea of mocking the books religious people base their lives on, like the south park people are with mormonism. I don't attack believers, the people I look up to the most are believers (my dad/Ron Paul/MLK Jr etc).

Now everyone calm down! Relax, with this wonderful advice from "Mormon." When things are bad, just throw your hands to the sky and say, "Hasa Diga Eebowai!"

I personally don't care what religion somebody is. Religion doesn't mean you have good morals/values, and lack of religion doesn't mean you don't have any either.

And by the way Stone and Parker have gone after everybody. I honestly can't think of one group they haven't portrayed in a satirical way, and I've been watching South Park since it first came out. This is why people tend not to really get upset over what they do-because they know they poke fun of every group.

They've already dedicated a whole episode of South Park to Mormonism (good episode btw), where the whole thing was satire about Joseph Smith, and the creation of the religion. So this is nothing new for them.

I remember seeing them on some tv program where one of them said something to the effect that they don't rule out any group-because the moment they do is when it becomes more than just satire-and when it becomes prejudice.

The Mormons really do believe all that. That Jesus has his own planet, for instance, or that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri. God miraculously changed his mind about black people in 1978.

Good idea, let's de-sensitize society about issues such as pedophiles, rape, domestic violence and murder too.

Idiot.

The fact that Romney is a Mormon doesn't bother me at all.

I'm sure there are some religious folks out there that it would bother though.

Hell when JFK ran for POTUS people were freaked because he was a "Catholic" for christs sake.

I have to apologize for one thing, the "you" in "you more outspoken atheist types" should have been a "your". I intended to generalize, not to point you or another person out specifically.

As for certain passages being contradictory the simple explaniation is the books may be the word of god, but the writers were man, and therefore fallable. Maybe weak to atheists, but its reasonable. Also realize catholics take alot of the stuff prior to Moses with a grain of salt as stories, or embelishments of what happened. They still do, however believe in the ressurection, and that you have to take on faith.

Why is it that the "Mormonism" of Mitt Romney seems to be a problem for socialist Democrats and left wing independents, but the "Mormonism" of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is OK? Oh! I think I know! Romney is a Republican and Reid is a Democrat. Sorry to bother you when I already knew the answer.

EXCELLANT point those that use somebody religion as a reason to disinfrancise him/her pick and choice there targets
kennedys catholicism was okay to it seems

The better, more honest post would've been for you to say "I'm offended you aren't a christian, so here comes my 3rd grade insult."

The play "The Book of Mormon," which opened on Broadway Thursday night, has stirred up some controversy over its satirical approach to the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Written by the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, "The Book of Mormon" examines blind belief in religion through a constant back-and-forth between fantasy and reality.

It's satire, written by the South Park guys. I think Romney's smart enough to realize it's not serious.

Unlike you.

You think Mitt thinks he religion is not serious?

Isn't Romney the guy who talked the Mormons in Salt Lake City into allowing alcohol sales at the Winter Olympics years ago?

Sadly i do not know any Broadway religious satire of islam... guess they don't have a very good sense of humor.

This is the best i can do on short notice... play it with volume way up though!

Mostly because no one on broadway (or hollywood) has the balls to make one. Bash christians and you get some bad press, and the Catholic league protesting on your doorstep. Bash jews and the JDL and some of the christian groups will attempt to boycott your business. Bash muslims and some idiots in sweden will have a riot and you will get death threats or fatwas against you.

Ill throw one in for my atheist buddies. Bash atheists and all you get is some even more condescending rants, and maybe a poorly made bus ad.

Christians used to kill to defend the faith...

...until they went soft.

Remember a few years ago when the rumor went around that the (book of muslem) Koran was mishandled and disrespected on Gitmo? It wasn't true but the left went crazy and all but rioted in the street over the alleged insult. There are concepts in the Koran that make your hair stand up on end but the left defends it while they attack the book of Mormon. Go figure out the radical left. I can't.

The key word is USED TO. We went through our reformation 400+ years ago, starting the seperation of secular power from religous power. Islam has not managed to do that yet, and may never be able to as the Koran is closer to the OT than the NT in setting up laws, procedure and protocols for people to follow.

I have to say, it's nice to hear people talking about the Book of Mormon. Even if it's in regards to the broadway play.

Now I just wish more people would read it.:)
