The American Dream is Dead

And society doesn't help them get out of that trap. The American Dream is dead.

Trap? Pfffft.

There are many who have a vested professional interest in convincing Americans that hard work and sacrifice no longer work.

What a horrible fucking thing to do to people who are fortunate enough to live here.

What a horrible fucking thing to do to a kid.

About the American Dream: when was the golden age alive?
Did the American dream take care of all Americans or just some?
If I were to look it up in a history book in what section would I find it?
Is this what Trump means by "Make America Great Again" ?

Millions of people in America are working hard simply to survive. All to the point that there's no room to invest in their future. And society doesn't help them get out of that trap. The American Dream is dead.

Anyone here who agrees?[/QUOTE

Try Horatio Alger.

You have to work hard at eliminating debt. Student loan debt is a terrible problem and contributes to the feeling of hopelessness.

Exactly. In America, where capitalism has almost no regulations, people can't afford education because of debt. Compare that to countries like Sweden, that also has capitalism – but regulated capitalism – education is not only free for ALL, you actually get money each month for studying! Everyone gets a fair chance to succeed in life, if they only work hard!

There is a reason why Sweden has more dollar billioners per capita than America – and that reason is capitalism under regulations. A government that first and formost take care of the people, not the capital.

I don't believe free college is practical or even something that should be pursued. It may be an American culture thing, but if we made college free, campuses would turn into a real-life version of Animal House.

But it does need to be much more affordable than it is now. The costs do not make sense. Government intervention into college loans definitely contributed to the meteoric rise in college costs.

USA has always treated my family pretty good and thats from my parents both born in the early to mid 20s up through me born in 1949 and to my kids born in the mid 70s . ----------------

FREE COLLEGE just devalues higher education which already sucks because its not really higher education . See some of the 'pap' typed out by the college educated on this message board . The rise in College costs are due to college professors being paid too much money and as i said college education sucks . Plumbers , welder , and building makes more money , see President Trump . Trumps idea on Apprenticeships is the way to go imo .

I totally and emphatically disagree. There are only two valid points made in the video. 1. Look at how many people in the US feel disillusioned. and 2. Sweden's socialist system is wonderful! Aside from those two points, the video is predicated on emotionalism. People work hard, they can't make it, they're struggling just to feed their poor children, no one is helping them.

So let'a first dispatch the two points in the video. 1. People tend to be disillusioned because they are constantly bombarded with negativism. They are continuously told they can't make it on their own. The deck is stacked against them. They are victims of a society controlled by the wealthy. It is easier to accept these excuses than to take responsibility for yourself. 2. Sweden is a relatively small country. The population is around the size of New Jersey. While small isolated countries can sometimes effectively make socialist systems work, it's not preferable in a large diverse continental nation like the US. The video doesn't mention that Swedes pay about 85% effective tax rates and have little disposable income. Sure, they have a lot of things that are "free" but let's take a look at that...

Whenever the government provides services or products, it is done through rationing. This means you have no choice in the quantity you receive and you'll simply be allocated the amount the government deems appropriate. There is also no regard for quality because there is no competition. Your choices are limited or nonexistent. As for cost, there is little motivation to keep costs low since it's not your money being spent. So in every aspect, this is a less desirable system than free market capitalism. And the larger the population, the more undesirable socialist systems become.

As for the emotive bleats... If this person spent as much time doing serious reflective introspection and actually looking for ways to improve themselves instead of whining and complaining, they would be much more successful. America is chock-full of examples of successful people, some of who came here with nothing, to realize the American Dream. It happens every day in America, regardless of race, ethnicity, background or sophistication.

This video is an example of someone who is simply too lazy to do the hard work required for success. They've decided it's much easier to whine and mope about the "evil rich people" than to get off their ass and get to work. And I don't mean "work harder" in terms of being more productive at a shitty job. I mean, working harder at improving yourself and clearing your pathway to success. Maybe that means putting up with that shitty job while you go back to school? Maybe it's just a matter of believing in yourself and having pride in what you're doing? Whatever it is, it's better than throwing up your hands and proclaiming you can't do anything because the rich people have all the wealth. Wealth is not finite! It is created through talent, imagination, labor, skill, etc.

I did the Horatio Alger bit. I stood around street corners waiting to help a rich man and he would give me half his company in return for my help. Didn't work out that way a few called the police or had their driver mess me up a little.
