I've heard that the amendment that allows for taxes to be collected was never actually properly ratified. Something about one of the states the amendment was sent to never replied to the amendment and thus the amendment never actually reached the 3/4th states that is required to pass an amendment.

The way it is allowed is that income taxes on ones labor is an indirect taxation and not a direct taxation. The Constitution mandated that Congress be allowed to tax indirectly. But don't worry the states are allowed to indirectly tax........
