I felt the story seemed odd also. In my experiences, it is not the conservatives/libertarians who engage in political discourse at work and as you say, who is going to recognize a relatively unknown catcher for Oakland? He could probably walk into a restaurant in Oakland and not be recognized, furthermore his "story" didn't get a great deal of coverage. Even if he follows baseball closely, he's not staying up to watch West coast baseball in all likelihood.
