Sterling Banned for Life

The thought police are now a reality. Even though I think Sterling is despicable- a lousy owner and a skinflint cheap bastard. I think this is a very bad precedent. He spoke these words in his own home, where he expected privacy.

I see a lucrative niche market developing for eating and drinking establishments that cater to successful people - The draw or attraction will be a total ban of all electronic devices -no cameras, cell phones, recorders, lap-tops, google glass, etc...nothing. A total electronic blackout.

Bank on it!!

They'll sneak them in, have spy type cameras like in their shirt buttons.. I bet escort agencies will have to take out major bonds to comfort rich men into feeling more secure that the chick isn't going to try to black mail him.

The only way to get in is after a strip search and a signed confidentiality agreement that has severe punishment for non-compliance.

How do you force a sale? The only way would be to ban the Clippers from playing next season, and I really don't see them trying it.

You can't by definition "ban" an owner.

I don't think the NBA can ban a team over an opinion of the owner. The result would be an immediate lawsuit by every team member for interference with contract.

They can if the other owners go for it, it is a franchise, it has by-laws and rules that as an owner you have to agree with before they will approve your membership. The owners vote to allow the sale of a team, they can vote to ban your team.

who is talking about banning a team?...no one in the NBA is....

But it appears they have.
Be careful what you say.

What they can do is ban him from day to day control of the franchise. They can also evidently remove his franchise rights by 3/4 vote of the other owners. I still think they would have to pay him fair market value for the team.

If he sells quickly then the NBA can get out of this relatively clean. If he fights it, or even worse decides to mess with the team to ruin is competitiveness out of spite, then all sorts of bad things can happen.

I think what he said was despicable. But banning him for life?? Really??

If I were him, considering he is very rich, I would accept the ban and refuse to sell the team. I would release any decent players and never draft anyone over 5'6" for the rest of the time I was alive.

I would make the Clippers the worst team in NBA history.

they have already had many a season were they were the worst in the NBA....

Who didn't know Sterling was a racist? Seriously, who didn't know? It's a well documented fact.

What took the NBA so long to take action? They knew what he is, they've known for better than twenty years.

Good riddance to bad rubbish I say. Never did like the Clippers ownership, Sterling always seemed to be a hindrance...

Kareem said as much today....

Donald Sterling, longtime owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was barred for life from the league and fined $2.5 million by N.B.A Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday for racist comments captured on an audio tape that Silver said Sterling admitted were his. Silver said Sterling would be barred from any contact with his team or the league and he will urge the league’s board of governors to force Sterling to sell the team.

And it only took 20+ years to do it.

The white owners and commissioners obviously, as a group, don't give a shit about racism unless it has the potential to affect the bottom line. This is my reading of the cited article. The author closes with this thought;

"The sad part is that it took this long. Maybe that is because until now everyone was making so much money. Maybe their pockets became so heavy they could not stand up for what was right."

Sterling's actual words said in private, offensive though they were, do not offend me near as much as the very public codified racism heard every day on Fox news and from ignorant politicians of the right and, though less often, the left.

Mark Cuban an owner of an NBA team was a bit concerned about taking a team away from an owner.
And he has a good point.

that is not true at all. i can privately besmirch any business. unless he knew he was being recorded, he had an expectation of privacy. that is the law. you are not intelligent in the slightest, no wonder you think the 1st amendment applies only to political speech.

Congratulations, for being on topic: stay there, please.

The facts prove you wrong, as almost always: the NBA fined him 2.5mm, banned him from life, and suggested strongly he sell his team.

You say something in private negatively about the business for which you work, and it comes out, you can be fired immediately.

that doesn't mean you cannot privately besmirch a business wannabe mod. unless he knew he was being recorded, she broke the law and violated his expectation of privacy. that is the law and no amount of whining on your part will change that. you are simply a thought nazi.

You are not a lawyer, so we will give you the respect you deserve on this. The facts are not on your side. The NBA fined him, banned him, and will force him to sell.

You are siding with a man who made racist comments that in association with his business damaged it.

He's the OWNER

He OWNS the team

Now you are back to supporting corporatism.

Sterling was part of the NBA ownership group, which is governed by association's by law.

Guess what.

He got his ass kicked, because he brought disdain on the league.

if you agree with Jake, raise your right hand

Now you, who worships business, condemns the NBA for disciplining Sterling.

I condemn them for selective implementation of their racism policy...ah who the fuck cares, the last NBA Game I watched Will Reed limped off the bench

I did know you were one of the Ancients. Reed, what a player!

Associations can selectively enforce their by laws.

Not at all. Silver acted with the authority of the league. The Jazz management gave a ringing endorsement of Silver's actions. Check the other teams on the issue.

you're not a lawyer fakey. yet your opinion is more valid? typical double standard fakey. FYI: i am completely right on this and you are 100% wrong.

how is me saying is he is senile and wrong for his statements, siding with him?

let me guess, you will never answer that because you're full of shit.

"Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." No, that was not about Marge Schott. Banned for life for being a moron in the privacy of your home. Egads morons can't even be morons today, I mean come on folks surely there are worst things in this world than being a bigot. I wonder if all the players, owners, and staff could pass the smell test? Will the militias defending that other imbecile Bundy invade the court. Could you imagine the purging of the bigots in all areas of life, not that there's anything right with that. lol

PS Sterling was a registered republican, not that matters but just to set the record straight.

The times they are achanging.....

Baseball's Greatest Scandals, #8: Marge Schott By Both Sides - AZ Snake Pit

"In February 1993, even baseball had had enough. Schott was fined $25,000, banned from baseball for a year, and ordered to attend multicultural training programs. The executive council running the game at that time found that she "commonly used language that is racially and ethnically insensitive,. offensive and intolerable," and that her behavior had "brought substantial disrepute and embarrassment to the game - and is not in the best interest of baseball." They still had to stop her from working in the front office, saying she could still attend games, but would have to buy a ticket - when Pete Rose heard this, he commented, "She'll probably wait for a $3 ticket night."

He should sell a team and I think there are plenty who would like to buy it if not for profit, then to get rid of him.

Only thing that puzzling me, all those things he said were part of private conversation. What that has to do with NBA?

The NBA is losing advertisers over it. They are a business that provides entertainment, and entertainment is subjective on the entertained paying for said entertainment (even if indirectly).

The NBA has to get rid of the guy, and the idiot deserves it. He is in a business that employs large amounts of African Americans, and caters to entertain large amounts of African Americans. His expecting privacy, while understandable does not remove the fact that the public will not forgive him, and that an entertainment business cannot piss off its customers and expect to survive.

My concern is that he goes all legal AND bat-shit about it, like playing games to an empty arena, or withdrawing travel and support functions. He has the money to do that at least for a short amount if time.

I understand that part with advertizing and sponsors but still, it was private conversation. If NBA knew about it, why didn't they do something before. Now NBA wants to be a good guy here. And Magic screwed him out of his mistress, then Magic is trying to screw him out of his team. Kinda fishy. Setup?

If Magic ends up with the team what would that mean? I suspect it would not be the first time that kind of stuff has happen in the world of big business. I am Just speculating; It make for a more interesting story.
