State Trivia...

The 82nd and the 101st lay claim to being the "First Airborne Division/Unit" in the Army. :)

So the answer is: Kentucky and North Carolina.
One was active before the other....

The 101st Airborne Division was activated at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana on 16
August 1942 under command of Major General William C. Lee and transferred
to Fort Bragg, North Carolina in September. It was one of two airborne
divisions created by dividing up the 82d Infantry Division. General Lee said of
the division: “The 101st Airborne... has no history, but it has a rendezvous
with destiny…”

...but both share the distinction as being 'the first' - :) Ask Armed Forces Network. :)

But theoretically, since they both divided from the 82nd Infantry Division,
and the 101st didn't come under activation untill a day after the 82nd,
then then 82nd would be the "true first"

...not occording to AFN. :)

n 25 March 1942,the 82nd Infantry Division was reactivated at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana under the command of Major General Omar N. Bradley (left). On August 15, 1942, the Division took wings as The 82nd Airborne - becoming the U.S. Army's first airborne division - now commanded by Major General Matthew B.Ridgway (below right).

At the same time, 82nd personnel also were used in the formation of a second airborne unit - the "Screaming Eagles" of the 101st Airborne Division.

Hmmm... Link says 82nd was the Army's first Airborne unit...
and that they were used to form a (get ready for this......)

second airborne unit

Looks like you proved my point perfectly.
It even says in the link what I already said.
82nd=15 August 1942.

In the Link I posted above it said
101st=16 August 1942

Which comes first?

"Second" in this context meand "additional". "At the same time" is what leads me to believe they 'both' are the first. ;)

and what personel were used to form this "additional" unit?

Doesn't additional mean also or to add to?
At the same time means at the same time the 82nd was the first (as the
story so plainly says) and they were forming another unit.

Your link even proved you wrong...

No..it means 'another'. Something created 'at the same time' as something else. :)

How can you ignore the fact that the story so clearly states that the
82nd was the Army's first Airborne Unit.
"in addition" the story states that a SECOND unit was formed.

yet the word "additional" means more to you.

The fact that the 82nd is still a truly airborne division while the 101st is an air assault division, well, that tells me SOMEBODY of import views the 82nd as having the most historical claim to being an airborne division or they would have given it to the 101 and the 82 would be AA instead.

JMHO.

If you guys are through with the Airborne issue, I will ask another state question: What state has the largest limestone quarry in the entire world?

What state besides Arizona also has a Grand Canyon?

While we are on the subject of the Grand Canyon, what state besides AZ also has a Little Grand Canyon?

Although I was actually birthed in one of them newfangled, big-city hospitals, my first home was Point Pleasant, Ohio - birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant.

Who is buried in Grant's tomb?

It's a joke that "nobody" is buried in Grant's Tomb. Actually, the tomb contains the remains of Grant and his wife.

Actually, if they are in a tomb then it is technically correct that nobody is buried there. They have been interred in a tomb, but can only be buried in a grave.
