A gunman on a scooter has opened fire on a Jewish school in the French city of Toulouse, killing three children and a teacher, police say.

A teenage boy was seriously injured in the attack outside the Ozar Hatorah school in the north-east of the city.

Police say there are similarities with the killings of three soldiers in two separate incidents in the same part of France last week.

All three - of North African origin - were shot by a man on a scooter.

A paratrooper out of uniform was shot dead in a residential area of Toulouse just over a week ago, while two soldiers were killed and a third wounded as they used a cashpoint in the town of Montauban, some 29 miles (46km) away, on Thursday.

But President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has gone to the scene, said it is "much too early" to know if there is a definite link.

After it jammed, he switched to a .45-caliber weapon and he entered the school grounds, where “he shot at everything he could see, children and adults, and some children were chased into the school.”

The prosecutor also said that one person remains seriously wounded in the attack. Rabbi Yonatan Sandler and his sons Aryeh and Gavriel – all of the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood in Jerusalem – were identified as 3 of the victims of Monday’s shooting attack on the Ozar HaTorah Jewish school in Toulouse on Monday. Another victim, 8 year-old Miriam Monsonego, was the daughter of school principal Rabbi Yaacov Monsonego.

The dead included Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, who taught at the school, his 3- and 6-year-old sons Gabriel and Arieh, and the school headmaster's 8-year-old daughter, according to the Israeli newspaper Ynet. Sandler, a French-Israeli national, had left Israel last September to begin a two-year teaching stint at the school, according to the Le Parisien newspaper.

A 17-year-old and two other students were seriously wounded.

French media have also reported that the same stolen Yamaha scooter was used in the school shooting and in last week's attack. However, there have been slightly differing descriptions of the motorcyle that suggest the same scooter might not have been used in all three attacks, or that it might have been painted.
