In a historic move, the state Senate voted unanimously Thursday to make Justice Richard A. Robinson the first African-American chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
Robinson’s approval was a relatively quick and smooth process following a bitter, elongated battle over Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s first choice for chief justice, Andrew McDonald. McDonald is a longtime political ally of Malloy, and his nomination was ultimately defeated.
By contrast, Robinson’s nomination had been suggested and embraced by Senate Republican leader Len Fasano, who led the fight against McDonald. Earlier this week, the state House of Representatives voted 146-0 for Robinson after a brief debate. In the same fashion, the Senate voted 36-0 Thursday.
“When you meet Justice Robinson, you’ll see he’s a very down-to-earth, regular guy … lighthearted as a person,’’ Fasano said on the Senate floor. “His experiences are varied and tremendous’’ on multiple levels.
