Passenger tossed after flipping out over staff s Merry Christmas Fox News

"A passenger was tossed off a plane at La Guardia Airport on Tuesday after flipping out — because airline workers wished him a merry Christmas.

The man was waiting to board American Airlines Flight 1140 to Dallas when a cheerful gate agent began welcoming everyone with the Yuletide greeting while checking boarding passes.

The grumpy passenger, who appeared to be traveling alone, barked at the woman, “You shouldn’t say that because not everyone celebrates Christmas.”

The agent replied, "Well, what should I say then?" "

"Don't say, 'Merry Christmas!'" the man shouted before brushing past her.

Once on the plane, he was warmly greeted by a flight attendant who also wished him a “merry Christmas.” That was the last straw.

"Don't say, 'Merry Christmas!'" the man raged before lecturing the attendants and the pilot about their faux pas. He was eventually led of the plane to a round of applause from passengers.

How do you know he was a secular humanist, and not Jewish or some other religion?

Because people of religion for the most part don't respond in that fashion. Militant atheists though??? That's their MO for sure.

Yes, by people making huge assumptions and sweeping generalizations. :p

And yet, at the center of every stereotype is that kernel of truth...

Well, the conflict could have been reduced if the man didn't make a "Generalization" on behalf of other people
who do or don't celebrate Christmas.

Just explaining that *HE* does not recognize Christmas, should be enough to warrant:
Sorry Sir, but have a happy holiday season and new year.

If he spoke for himself and was offended on just his part,
that could have EASILY been kept in perspective and handled personally better.

The staff could have been trained to keep it from escalating into a public scene or statement.
Hopefully more people will learn from this, and be better prepared how to handle offended guests without making it worse.

Nothing wrong with people recognizing their own biases and stereotypes.
Where people get in conflicts and start talking past each other and competing
is by "assuming" that a person or statement "represents" a larger group or stereotype.

So yes, I can see Carla Danger's point, that it is JUST as wrong to take this "one man"
and say he "represents the majority of hostile atheists or secularists".

That is just as wrong as him making a "disproportionate fuss" over the reference to Christmas bigger than just himself.
It's fine for HIM to express his OWN offense at it.
But if he is going to make a statement "on behalf of any others who are offended" that is trying to represent MORE than just the one time incident. He is trying to say it "represents" a larger imposition on other people besides just him hearing it.

So that is where if he makes a bigger fuss, then other people who don't see it that way can get equally offended
by his generalization, the same way he felt they were generalizing and assuming the majority celebrated Christmas.

No need for either generalization, or the ones made about this man afterwards!

By the time he thought all that through the plane would be gone.

Stereotypes exist because of the consistent traits exuded by those who the stereotype general describes.

What you're doing is implying that these traits do not generally exist.

The coolest part about that, is that any reasonable person knows that these traits exist... and that's how we judge, in general terms, who we can and cannot trust. It's a function of the base odds of probabilities that the human brain uses to promote survival, prosperity and happiness. And there you are denying that there's something intrinsically wrong with it...

Now, of the two perspective, good and evil. Which do ya suppose would be the one that would promote that sort of deceit? Which would advocate such a fraudulence? And which would promote such an appeal to ignorance?

"Go Home Karl... you're drunk." is an acceptable response.

As is: Gustof, get this idiot out of here.... he's drunk again!".

Some have had success with: Look Buddy... It's Christmas, you're not required to accept it, but you being pissed, isn't going to change it. Now sit your ass down or I'll have the Air Martial frog march your ass to a little room downstairs, where you'll sit in the dark handcuffed to a steel desk, until AFTER CHRISTMAS!

Or..its assumed to be. You've still presented exactly nothing that this man was a secular humanist. You simply assume he was....based on your own stereotypes and prejudices.

Um...so what?

He doesn't.

It's an unfounded assumption.
