There is no problem with the electoral college. If there is a problem it is with the states. you can win a state by 100 vote and collect all the electoral votes of the state, that is the law of the individual states, States can easily change their state laws and divide the electoral votes more closely to match there general elections. Then the only bonus for that's state general election winner would be the (2) senate electoral votes to give the less populated state more input on the federal elections. That founding fathers did not dictate that it be a winner take all in the state elections, but only devised a way for the states to elect the president.
