"Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. We hear it everywhere in the speeches of politicians and the sermons of priests. The infamous greater good is always said to be in the minds of our leaders, never in our own heads, and if we follow these figures we are told we will find salvation."

I'm getting a little tired of being told it is noble to sacrifice for the 'greater good'.

Followed the link and tried to make sense out of the article.:lol::lol:

gawd, this kid Steve (the author), is a total moron.

"Altruism is the fuel that motivates young and foolish men everywhere to fight wars and commit senseless acts of violence in the blind interests of dogmatic leaders"

Like most moronic dupes, he totally glosses over what altruism has given us: Memorial Day. Today we honor those who out of altruism kept us free to post our bullshit here without fear we will be arrested or committed.

Alterism is a kind of charity but charity is an act of choice and not a national endeavor. Most people on the left sell their version of this as some kind of noble endeavor were individuals obtain redemption for their sins. Its one thing to die for a nations causes but its quite another to believe that serving your nation guarantees your passage into heaven. That is between you and your religion which has nothing to do with the actions of your government.

altruism is neither liberalism or conservatism. It is it's own ism.

the author was knocking altruism and quoting Rand.

The author happens to be correct. In the 19th century people served their country in wars for causes they believed in and that cause's goal was the reward. The patriots of 1776 fought for a cause to liberate their country from British rule and that goal in itself was the only reward.

Unfortunately the progressive movement in this country turned serving a nations causes into a holy crusade for personal redemption and now serving our country in a time of war has became its own spiritual reward.

Its the reason why serving your country in any aspect such as serving in the peace core receives 'bonus honor' that doing the same thing in a non-government way doesn't get.

Cherry picking facts that are correct is what you are talking about. The authors main points about the evils of altruism are totally outweighed by the facts not cherry picked.

We would not be free if it were not for altruism.

    end of story
