Abu Nidal was one of the worst in the 1970s and 1980s. He created an "Alphabet Soup" of organizations after he split with the PLO in 1974. Including the main outfit, the "Abu Nidal Organization (ANO). In many ways, he was a forerunner of al-Qaeda.

He started his organization in Syria, then moved it to Libya in 1986 after the Pan Am 73 hijacking. And once there with the full support of the Gaddafi Government he set up and ran operations for them. And Pan Am 103 was done by the ANO at the urging of Gaddafi himself.

However, Pan Am 103 made Abu Nidal too hot for Libya, so he was expelled from there also. That is when he turned up in Iraq. Where he lived in relative comfort, until Iraq came under increased pressure from the UN to turn him over and to comply with the UN sanctions.

Well, at that time apparently Abu Nidal committed suicide, via multiple gunshots to the head.

But Gaddafi was a huge supporter of Abu Nidal, and made no secret that he was not only training and funding his organization, but that they were good friends. Gaddafi himself stated that on many occasions.
