SANTA ANA, Calif. - An Orange County sheriff's reserve deputy was arrested after he allegedly showed his badge and pulled a gun on a group of golfers in Chino Hills over the weekend.

Raymond Yi, 44, was arrested Monday by San Bernardino sheriff's deputies on suspicion of brandishing a firearm. Yi was released the same day.

Yi, a personal martial arts instructor for Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona, got into a dispute on Sunday with a group of golfers at the Los Serranos Golf & Country Club.

The dispute started when Yi's ball landed near the foursome playing ahead of him for the second time, the golfers said. Yi apparently was upset over the foursome's slow play and pulled out a gun, said Robin Haynal, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Marcelo Bautista, 36, a math teacher at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, and Javier Bautista, 35, an engineer for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Water District, said one of the shots nearly struck Marcelo Bautista. He then hit Yi's ball off the fairway.

The brothers said Yi approached them and then came back and flashed his badge. Yi asked that they get his ball and when they began driving away in a golf cart, they said Yi pulled his gun and yelled, "'Freeze'" and "'I will kill you,'" Javier Bautista said.

"It was a scary feeling," Marcelo Bautista said. "He was acting so erratic and odd it was like he was in a road rage. His behavior was completely out of line."

A short time later, the dispute started up again and the brothers told authorities that Yi pulled out his gun for a second time and threatened to kill them.

Yi was sworn in as an Orange County reserve deputy in May 2002 after being referred to the department by Carona. Yi had been issued a permit to carry a concealed weapon a year earlier, authorities said.

Michael Schroeder, a lawyer and spokesman for Carona, said that under department policy, any officer who is arrested is subject to an internal review.

Yi's arrest follows an investigation in which some reserves who were political allies of Carona were removed from the state's peace officer database after it was discovered that they were appointed without background checks.

Under a tentative agreement with state officials, the Orange County Sheriff's Department is working to reinstate them.

but brandishing weapons in the interest of speeding the foursome in front of you seems counterproductive.
