Rick Perry Backs Off Social Security 'Ponzi Scheme' Comments

WASHINGTON -- Texas governor and Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry recently walked back his claims that Social Security is a "Ponzi scheme," but other Republicans have made similar statements in recent months, saying the entitlement program is a "scheme" to take money from the American people.

Perry has previously taken a hard-line stance against Social Security. In his 2010 book, "Fed Up!" he suggested the program was unconstitutional, put in place "at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government." He also wrote that Social Security is "set up like an illegal Ponzi scheme."

Perry has since backed off. His spokesman, Ray Sullivan, told the Wall Street Journal Thursday that the book was not meant to reflect the governor's current views on Social Security.

He said it, repeated it and should stick by it.

He's just another neo-con sacrificing his integrity. The guy's pathetic.

The truth of it is, America is a big and diverse place, hardly represented by Texas.

Even a lot of Repub voters support Social Security and Medicare. He's going to have to trim if he hopes to get the nomination, to say nothing of the general election. How he trims will say a lot about his potential to win.

I support both. Safety Net. The thing is that they both are seriously fucked up and need reform in order to remain solvent. Decisions do need to be made, course adjustments, even protections from the Funds being raided.

We need to start exposing and questioning the Magic Act, Smoke and Mirrors only buys get away time for the culprits responsible for the mess. We need precision surgery here, not a hatchet job.

Yeah, how dare he tell the truth.

Social Security IS a Ponzi Scheme.

And like all Ponzi Schemes, it is running out of money, because they always do. About the time they run out of suckers.
Interesting, isn't it, that Perry is backing off the comment?

Since he really didn't, no.

I think that one can believe that Social Security is a horrible mistake that never should have been enacted yet still realize that you can't get rid of it at this point. It is, after all, a sizeable part of the economy.

I go back to the Great One, Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan spoke out against Social Security, and Jimmy Carter attempted to stir up fear amongst old people. Didn't work then, won't work now.

And eventually, he was kind of proven right by the fact that Social Security was nearly broke by about 1983. He had to impose a lot of changes. But he preserved it at the end of the day, bought it another 30 years of life.
