Republicans Say Forced Labor Is Good for Detained Immigrants in Letter Defending Private Prison

There's forcing and then there's forcing. I don't approve of forcing people to do back breaking or slave type labor, but pitching in to keep the prison up certainly doesn't seem unfair to me. You can't force an inmate to do even that in our state.

Yes, absolutely put them to work to help pay for the expense of housing and feeding them. What on earth is wrong with that?

Lots of states make prison inmates work to help offset the cost of their incarceration.

Making our workers compete against slave labor is even more damaging to the economy than making them compete against illegal alien labor.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to put illegal aliens to work turning big rocks into small rocks for the concrete we need for a national security wall.

The dirty little secret is that there is no "forced labor" in the United States prison system and nobody has been sentenced to "hard labor" since Jimmy Cagney said "top of the world ma". There is a complicated parole rating system and inmates are offered a deal to make constructive use of their time in exchange for a limited sentence and compensation. The pop-culture video game educated idiots might think "Shawshank Redemption" is reality but it ain't.
