Report: Obama Offers to Scrap Missile Shield If Russia Cooperates on Iran

President Obama offered to consider scrapping plans for a missile defense shield in Europe if Russia helps rein in Iran's nuclear program, the Russian newspaper Kommersant reported.

The article said Obama wrote to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to tell him Russia's aid in resolving the threat from Iran would make the missile shield plans unnecessary, according to an account from Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

A senior administration official told FOX News that Obama sent a letter to Medvedev but "we won't comment on the specifics."

Obama inherited plans to build the system in Poland and the Czech Republic from the Bush administration, but the new administration has equivocated over the project. Though the plans were put in place to deter nations like Iran and North Korea from launching attacks and developing nuclear weapons, Russia has interpreted the planned installation as a threat

My thinking is we're not going to be able to prevent unstable countries from acquiring nukes in the long run, so we need countermeasures including but not limited to the missile shield. Ideally most countermeasures would be secret, though, so that sophisticated delivery mechanisms aren't designed to circumvent them.

its about 5 or 6 completely different systems that are intergrated and work together

the russian have enough that they could easily overwhelm any missile defense we could produce
same for US over them

I can see you feel strongly about this, but if you want people who are on the fence to come to your side you might want to dispense with such hyperbole.

Personally I'm not an economic expert, but know that we have a long way to go before understanding economics. It's mostly philosophy talk so far. Experts still can't agree on what pulled us out of the last depression. Understanding economics is going to require sciences like sociology and psychology to move past their infancy.

And a minor note 3 trillion / 300 million = 10,000.

I'm not a politician and I dont care who agrees with me, I'm a citizen and I'm not looking for a vote.

I'm not partisan either, I'm not going to just agree with politicians because they are members of my party.

I want this nation to be better and Obama isnt giving us any change or hope, hes just manipulating us all.

I would rather have Paul right now then Obama and I hate Paul, hes about as crazy and drastic as Biden.

I don't agree about Russian cooperation. NOTHING is going to keep Iran from going nuclear.

However, I have no problem with scrapping the missile defense system in Europe unless they're paying in cash. Otherwise, we are hardly in an economic position to be giving away anything.
